Celtic Offer New Contract to Striker Kelechi Iheanacho
According to a transfer update from Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph, Celtic have offered Kelechi Iheanacho a new contract. The Nigerian forward is currently training on his own after his Parkhead deal expired several weeks ago. The striker has yet to accept the proposal, as he is currently weighing his options before deciding on his next move.
The 29-year-old Nigerian international joined the club on a Bosman transfer in September to reunite with Brendan Rodgers. However, the Northern Irish manager left his post less than two months later following a series of poor results. Iheanacho, who arrived to lead the attack, struggled with recurring injuries for much of the season. He eventually regained his fitness late in the campaign and scored several vital goals as a substitute, helping the club secure a domestic double.
Although the deadline to trigger a one-year extension on his previous contract has passed, Martin O’Neill has confirmed that the club has made a concrete offer to the player. The veteran manager has expressed his desire to retain the striker, leaving the decision to Iheanacho as he considers a return or a move elsewhere.
What Role Iheanacho Would Be Offered At Celtic
Despite a slow start to the transfer window, Celtic have recently increased their activity. O’Neill has convinced Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to stay for another season, and the club has invested approximately £6m to sign Camilo Duran from Qarabağ. Meanwhile, Daizen Maeda is pursuing an exit to test himself in the Premier League, and the versatile Duran could serve as a direct replacement.
The club previously struggled with winter signings, as loan players Tomas Cvancara and Junior Adamu failed to earn permanent deals. With Johnny Kenny potentially being offloaded amid interest from English clubs, Callum Osmand remains the only other striking option. Iheanacho’s experience would be a valuable asset, similar to his impact in scoring late winners earlier this year.
However, the coaching staff must carefully manage his playing time to prevent future fitness issues. If Iheanacho returns to Celtic Park, he would likely occupy a squad role, with Duran expected to lead the line following his arrival.
