Thomas Tuchel Commits to England Manager Role Despite World Cup Setback
Thomas Tuchel has confirmed his intention to remain as England manager through Euro 2028, despite a disappointing semi-final exit against Argentina. In a match on Wednesday, Argentina’s Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez scored late goals, securing a 2-1 victory that sent Lionel Messi’s team into the weekend final against Spain.
England seemed poised for victory after Anthony Gordon’s goal in the second half. However, Argentina intensified their attack, with Fernandez equalizing before Martinez scored the winner in the 92nd minute, assisted by Messi.
Tuchel faced criticism for his tactical decisions during the match, especially after substituting Gordon with defender Ezri Konsa in the 72nd minute.

In comments made on the BBC, Wayne Rooney criticized Tuchel’s tactics, stating, “It was too passive. Thomas Tuchel didn’t change anything, but Argentina started to come onto them. Top managers counteract what is going on and don’t go even deeper. What they do is go more front-footed and try to change the tempo and rhythm of the game. I think he got it wrong.
“Against this team, the world champions, you will not get away with it. This has been the biggest test and we have failed it.”
However, in his post-match news conference in Atlanta, Tuchel maintained that he had no regrets about the match. “The team gave everything and we were very, very close,” he said. “The team was top; we couldn’t bring it over the line, but at the moment, no regrets.”
Prior to the tournament, Tuchel had extended his contract through to the home Euros, which will be co-hosted by England, Wales, Scotland, and the Republic of Ireland. He remarked, “We keep on going with the contract until the home Euros. I’m looking forward to that even though right now it’s difficult to look that far ahead.”
