Adi Hütter Welcomes Sebastian Rode Back to Eintracht Frankfurt Bench: “He Was My Captain”

Sebastian Rode Takes on Key Role as Eintracht Frankfurt Restructures Leadership

Former Eintracht Frankfurt captain Sebastian Rode is set to make his return to the Bundesliga touchline on Sunday evening, marking a significant step in the club’s extensive restructuring of its sporting leadership. The 36-year-old will transition into a more prominent role within the first-team environment while sporting director Timmo Hardung expands his administrative duties following the departure of Markus Krösche.

This new position for Rode signifies an important phase in his journey from professional football to club management. The ex-midfielder, who previously led Frankfurt to its historic 2022 Europa League victory, will act as a crucial link between the players, coaching staff, and sporting department. This development coincides with reports that Frankfurt is nearing the appointment of Joti Chatzialexiou, the sporting executive from 1. FC Nürnberg, as Krösche’s successor.

Joti Chatzialexiou Reportedly Closing in on Frankfurt Appointment

Frankfurt’s search for a new sporting executive seems to be reaching its conclusion. As reported earlier this week by Get German Football News, Frankfurt had narrowed down its candidates to Chatzialexiou and RB Leipzig managing director for sport Marcel Schäfer.

Recent developments indicate that Chatzialexiou has become the preferred choice. According to Frankfurter Rundschau, negotiations are in the final stages, with Chatzialexiou having included an exit clause in his Nürnberg contract during his extension in August. It is reported that Frankfurt would need to pay less than €1 million to secure his services.

The official announcement of the appointment is yet to be made.

As noted in an extensive analysis by GGFN, Frankfurt aims to create a more sustainable approach to squad development while enhancing its domestic recruitment and academy structures.

Axel Hellmann Explains the Sporting Department’s Restructuring

Frankfurt CEO Axel Hellmann confirmed the organizational changes through an official announcement on Thursday. Timmo Hardung, previously closely working with Krösche, will now oversee additional departments, including direct responsibility for the medical operations and youth academy, both of which were previously under the purview of the Board Member for Sport.

“Timmo Hardung has been tasked with overseeing all sporting departments in men’s football until further notice,” Hellmann stated. “The expansion of his responsibilities necessitates a shift in focus from team-related tasks to strategic and organizational matters.”

The integration of Rode into the first-team environment is designed to mitigate Hardung’s reduced involvement in those areas. Hellmann expressed confidence in Rode’s ability to fit into this role.

“As a highly respected former player, Sebastian Rode brings valuable qualities through his experience, personality, and close connection to Eintracht Frankfurt,” Hellmann remarked.

In this new capacity, Rode will serve as an additional contact for the team and coaching staff while Hardung concentrates on broader sporting operations.

Adi Hütter Welcomes Sebastian Rode Back to the Bench

Rode returned to Frankfurt in September to embark on a trainee program aimed at familiarizing him with various aspects of the club’s operations. From November 1, he will continue this program within the sporting department while taking on added responsibilities in the immediate first-team environment.

Rode’s extensive playing background and strong rapport with returning head coach Adi Hütter position him well for this new role. During Friday’s pre-match press conference ahead of Frankfurt’s Bundesliga match against Hamburger SV, Hütter confirmed that Rode would join him on the bench.

“That’s why we’re bringing Sebastian closer to us,” Hütter commented. “It was my wish. He was my captain and has a good relationship with the boys.”
