Barcelona Set to Strengthen Defense with January Centre-Back Signing
Barcelona is preparing to make a move in the January transfer market to acquire a new centre-back. After opting against strengthening this position during the summer transfer window, the club aims to address its defensive vulnerabilities with a significant signing during the mid-season window.
The Catalan giants are specifically in search of a left-footed centre-back capable of making an immediate impact. This has led to links with various players, including Lisandro Martinez from Manchester United and Natan from Real Betis.
In addition, Arsenal defender Piero Hincapie has emerged as another potential target for the La Liga champions. Speculation suggests that Barcelona could explore a swap deal involving Alejandro Balde moving to Arsenal in exchange for Hincapie. However, Fabrizio Romano has reported that any potential swap involving these players is highly unlikely.
According to sources, Arsenal is unwilling to entertain offers for Hincapie. The Premier League champions have no plans to sell the 24-year-old defender. Hincapie, who spent the previous season on loan at Arsenal from Bayer Leverkusen, played a crucial role in the team’s Premier League success. Although his move was made permanent in the summer, he has struggled for regular playing time lately due to injuries and tactical decisions from manager Mikel Arteta. This situation has prompted speculation surrounding a possible January transfer, with Barcelona reportedly showing interest.
Romano confirmed that Arsenal holds Hincapie in high regard and sees no reason to part with him, emphasizing that the defender will not be sold or included in any swap deal with Balde.
Despite the Hincapie situation, the possibility of Balde leaving Barcelona remains on the table. Romano suggests that the young defender could consider a departure if his playing situation does not improve in the coming months. Interest in Balde is growing from clubs in both the Premier League and Serie A, though links to a swap deal with Hincapie at Arsenal have been dismissed.
