Arsenal Pursues Cristian Romero Amid Tottenham’s Reluctance to Sell

On Thursday, James McNicholas from The Athletic reported that Arsenal has shown interest in Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero for the summer transfer window.

The report also indicated that Tottenham was not aware of Arsenal’s interest, suggesting that the Gunners may have pursued inquiries via intermediaries. Despite this, Spurs are firmly opposed to selling Romero to their local rivals, regarding such a transaction as a non-starter.

In a potential shift of focus, Spurs are likely to entertain offers from foreign clubs, with Atletico Madrid and Inter Milan signaling their interest. Earlier discussions saw Inter verbally agree to a fee around €40 million, however, personal terms remain unresolved, prompting Atletico to join the bidding.

Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Atletico are engaged in direct talks with Spurs regarding Romero, noting that while Arsenal’s interest is acknowledged, Atletico currently lead the pursuit for the player.

Romano further mentions that Inter’s complications with their bid stem from the necessity of offloading players before finalizing any new signings.

In the meantime, Arsenal is actively seeking a backup defender this summer, particularly with William Saliba facing a stint on the sidelines.

The Gunners seem to be exploring several options, although the pursuit of Romero may indicate that they are casting their net a bit too widely.

Arsenal are reportedly interested in Cristian Romero, but Tottenham Hotspur are totally against selling to their local rivals.

James McNicholas reported for The Athletic on Thursday evening that Arsenal are among the clubs interested in Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero this summer.

The report added that Spurs were unaware of Arsenal’s interest, so the Gunners’ enquiries were presumably through intermediaries. But Spurs would be unwilling to sell Romero to Arsenal, and they consider that deal a non-starter.

Instead, Spurs are likely to sell abroad, with Atletico Madrid and Inter Milan interested. Inter previously verbally agreed a fee of around €40m, but haven’t agreed personal terms, allowing Atletico to enter the race.

Fabrizio Romano reports that Atletico are in club-to-club talks with Spurs over Romero, adding that Arsenal have indeed made enquiries, but Atletico are the primary club in talks with the player as it stands.

Romano adds that part of the problem for Inter’s bid was that they need players to leave first.

Arsenal are looking for a backup defender this summer, with William Saliba set for a spell on the sidelines.

The Gunners are clearly casting a wide net to try and find a good option, though perhaps considering signing Romero is a sign the net is a bit too wide.
