Barcelona to Hold Minute of Silence in Tribute to Jesús de Miguel and Accident Victims
Barcelona will honor the memory of CD Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel and the victims of a tragic train accident in Urda, Toledo, with a minute of silence before their Champions League match against Aston Villa at the Spotify Camp Nou on Tuesday evening.
The tribute serves as a memorial for De Miguel, who passed away at the young age of 30 after sustaining serious injuries in a collision with Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Lázaro Owono during a La Liga Hypermotion match. This gesture comes at a challenging time for Spanish football.
UEFA has confirmed that all European fixtures this week, including matches in both the Europa League and Conference League, will pay respect to those who have lost their lives. Barcelona’s commemoration will also include remembrance of the 69 victims of the recent railway tragedy in Toledo last Wednesday.
UEFA Confirms Tributes Across European Competitions
In light of the recent mourning in football, UEFA has arranged for moments of silence to be observed before this week’s European matches as a tribute to De Miguel.
The forward required immediate medical attention during his match against Andorra, as he was taken to the hospital by ambulance after treatment on the pitch. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he died on Tuesday morning, eliciting widespread condolences from clubs and organizations throughout Spanish football.
Barcelona had already expressed their sympathies following his death, joining Real Madrid and other clubs in offering condolences to his family, teammates, and everyone connected with CD Tenerife.
“FC Barcelona deeply regrets the tragic news of the passing of Jesús de Miguel, a player for CD Tenerife,” stated the club. “Our heartfelt support and encouragement go out to his family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time.”
Barcelona Previously Honored Victims During Alaves Match
The Catalan club had already held a minute of silence before their La Liga match against Deportivo Alaves on Saturday. Similar tributes have been seen throughout Spanish football following the railway tragedy.
In related news, as reported by sources, Barcelona president Joan Laporta plans to publicly convey his condolences before the traditional board lunch with representatives from Aston Villa.
