Barcelona Targets Manchester City, Manchester United Stars to Strengthen Defence

Barcelona Eyes January Transfer Window to Bolster Defense Following Key Defeats

In a major development, Mundo Deportivo reports that Barcelona is preparing to enhance their defense in the upcoming January transfer window after recent defeats to PSG and Real Madrid revealed significant issues with their defensive lineup.

The Catalan club is in search of a seasoned centre-back who can make an immediate impact, with names such as Josko Gvardiol from Manchester City and Lisandro Martinez from Manchester United emerging as potential candidates.

Defensive Strengthening Becomes Priority After Recent Losses

Barcelona’s impressive streak of 11 consecutive victories—nine in La Liga and two in the Champions League—came to a sudden halt with their losses against PSG and Real Madrid.

These matches exposed defensive frailties that the team could not rectify during the summer transfer window.

Coach Hansi Flick opted to maintain Andreas Christensen alongside Pau Cubarsi and Gerard Martin, with Eric Garcia stepping in as a solution at right-back. Jules Kounde was also evaluated as a potential central defender.

The recent challenges and a number of injuries have strengthened Barcelona’s commitment to resolving defensives issues in January.

The club is focused on securing a centre-back with experience and the capability to perform effectively, especially against competitive teams in both La Liga and the Champions League.

Defensive Targets: Gvardiol and Bastoni on Barcelona’s Radar

Josko Gvardiol is regarded as Barcelona’s top target. The 24-year-old Manchester City defender has garnered support from the club’s leadership and possesses the additional benefit of being able to play as a left-back.

However, securing Gvardiol would be a challenging task. He signed an extension with Manchester City that lasts until 2031, placing the Premier League club in a favorable negotiating position.

Another centre-back in Barcelona’s sights is Alessandro Bastoni. The 27-year-old Inter Milan defender was previously considered in the summer and would bring top-level experience to the squad.

However, with his contract extending until June 2028, persuading Inter to permit his transfer mid-season will likely prove challenging.

Lisandro Martinez and Natan Considered as Likely Alternatives

Barcelona is also exploring alternatives that may be more reachable in the winter transfer market.

Lisandro Martinez, the 28-year-old Argentina international at Manchester United, is among the options. His contract expires in June, which could incentivize the Red Devils to negotiate a transfer rather than risk losing him without compensation.

Nevertheless, Barcelona will approach any potential deal with caution due to his injury history.

Natan, a 25-year-old centre-back from Real Betis, represents another promising option. He excelled last season as the Verdiblancos secured Champions League qualification and has continued to perform admirably this season.

His estimated transfer fee stands at around €30 million, which could increase based on various conditions. While this would still be a considerable investment for Barcelona, his youth, recent form, and familiarity with Spanish football may make him a favorable alternative to harder-to-obtain targets.
