Barcelona Faces Defensive Shortage, No Move for Pedro Porro Planned
Barcelona has completed a summer transfer window without adding defensive reinforcements, even as Ronald Araujo has gone out on loan and Alvaro Cortes has made a permanent exit. While the team has secured Joao Cancelo’s permanent transfer, his prior loan status does not strengthen the squad’s options significantly.
The team’s current struggles in defense have sparked discussions about potential reinforcements as January approaches. With key players such as Jules Kounde, Eric Garcia, Andreas Christensen, and Xavi Espart dealing with injuries, coach Hansi Flick finds his choices limited. This situation has led to speculation about a potential move for Pedro Porro from Tottenham.
However, transfer expert Matteo Moretto reports that the club is not pursuing a deal for the Tottenham right-back at this time.
Barcelona president Joan Laporta had previously expressed interest in Porro, particularly after he impressed during Spain’s successful World Cup campaign. Sporting director Deco has also shown admiration for the player, and the club made inquiries about his situation towards the end of the recent transfer window.
Despite the initial interest, Moretto indicates the club currently has other priorities and is not in competition for Porro’s services.
One significant hurdle for Barcelona is the financial aspect; Porro commands a high salary at Tottenham, a reflection of his status in the Premier League. He recently signed a contract extension until 2031, which gives Tottenham the upper hand in negotiations. The London club is likely to seek over €60 million for Porro, a considerable expenditure for Barcelona.
Should Porro decide to leave Spurs, he reportedly favors a move to Barcelona over Real Madrid, but the Catalan club must manage its options carefully.
Barcelona’s immediate need lies in bolstering their central defense. Currently, the team’s depth in this area is lacking, with only Pau Cubarsi and Gerard Martin as the fit central defenders available to Flick. Given Christensen’s recent unreliability, it becomes crucial for Barcelona to acquire a sturdy central defender in January.
While Porro could add attacking strength at right-back, Barcelona’s more pressing concern remains their depth in central defense. If resources allow, the club needs to prioritize securing a central defender to strengthen its backline, as Renowned players like Porro may not be their most urgent need at this stage.
