Nico Schlotterbeck Set to Stay at Borussia Dortmund Amid Transfer Speculation
Real Madrid’s interest in defensive target Nico Schlotterbeck has come to a halt as he will continue to be a player for Borussia Dortmund for the foreseeable future. Any chances of a transfer during this summer window are now effectively ruled out.
According to BILD (h/t AS), the centre-back is no longer expected to leave the Bundesliga club, putting an end to the ongoing speculation linking him to Real Madrid in recent months.

No summer exit on the cards
Schlotterbeck had been a defender admired by Real Madrid as they sought to strengthen their backline, but a deal is now considered off the table.
Despite having signed a new contract earlier this year, the agreement included a special release clause which Los Blancos could have triggered a move for him this summer.

However, the report states that any opportunity to activate the release clause has now expired, while the Germany international is under contract with Dortmund until 2031, giving the club full control over his future.

The Bundesliga giants have consistently viewed the 26-year-old as a vital part of their long-term plans, ensuring he will remain with them for at least the upcoming season.
Recovery remains the priority
Currently, Schlotterbeck’s main focus is on recovering from injury.
The defender has been out of action due to an ankle problem sustained during Germany’s second group-stage match at the World Cup against Ivory Coast, and he is expected to be sidelined for several more weeks.
The injury severely hampered Schlotterbeck’s chances of securing a transfer to Real Madrid, marking the end of any potential deal.

Borussia Dortmund CEO Lars Ricken recently updated on the defender’s recovery during the club’s pre-season preparations, stating that Schlotterbeck is expected to return sometime in the autumn, although a specific date has yet to be established.
What next for Real Madrid?
For Real Madrid, new manager Jose Mourinho remains determined to add another central defender, despite having secured Ibrahima Konate’s services earlier in the summer.
Currently, Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni has emerged as the preferred target for the Portuguese tactician.
However, Real Madrid maintains that they need to make some sales before adding any more players to their roster, with Raul Asencio being tipped for a departure, potentially making space for Bastoni’s arrival.
