Cannavaro Discusses Coaches, Strikers, and Weekend Clash Between Juventus and Napoli
In a recent interview with Betsson.Sport, Fabio Cannavaro shared insights about Luciano Spalletti and Massimiliano Allegri as they prepare for Sunday’s match between Juventus and Napoli. The showdown is set to kick off at 20:45 CET (19:45 GMT) at the Allianz Stadium.
“Spalletti and Allegri are two exemplary coaches who have achieved remarkable success in recent years,” noted Cannavaro, a former defender for both teams. “They have a deep understanding of Italian football, including how to manage players, media, and fan expectations. Tactically, they are adaptable and can shift their strategies based on their players’ strengths.”
Allegri, however, will miss the match as he serves the second game of a two-match ban, leaving assistant Marco Landucci to take the lead.
Both teams enter the match with 14 points, but their recent performances leave them in contrasting spirits. While Napoli secured a commanding 4-1 victory against Monza on Wednesday, Juventus faced a disappointing 2-0 defeat at Genoa. In response to the loss, Spalletti expressed regret to supporters.
According to Cannavaro, “Napoli have certainly dealt with a number of injury setbacks early in the season, while Juventus, having undergone several changes since last year, are struggling to maintain consistency. Coaches like Gasperini and Chivu have successfully worked with their teams, leading to noticeable progress this season.”
The former Ballon d’Or winner also praised the center-backs for both teams. “I really like Buongiorno; he embodies what it means to be a true defender. He has a keen sense of danger and knows when to assert himself. The same applies to Bremer; they are both exceptional athletes. Unfortunately, they frequently deal with injuries but are essential to Juve and Napoli.”
Alessandro Buongiorno remains sidelined until the new year due to knee surgery, and Gleison Bremer’s status for the match is uncertain.
Cannavaro expressed less enthusiasm about the current strikers, stating, “Højlund and Kolo Muani are hardworking players, but the game today has shifted to being faster and more athletic. Strikers from my era were more ‘killer’ in front of goal. Present-day strikers contribute more to team play and often focus on off-ball movements.”
Reflecting on his own experiences, Cannavaro recalled the emotional impact of his Napoli debut, stating, “That day remains one of the most significant moments of my life. Playing in Serie A for the team I have loved since childhood is a rare opportunity.”
