Celtic Reignites Interest in Kasper Høgh Ahead of Summer Transfer Window

If a recent report from SunSport is believed to be true, Celtic have resurrected their interest in Kasper Høgh ahead of a potential summer swoop. They were keen on securing his services back in January. However, Bodø/Glimt’s scintillating Champions League run forced Martin O’Neill to settle with Tomas Cvancara and Junior Adamu on loan from Borussia Mönchengladbach and Freiburg, respectively.

Meanwhile, neither of the attacking duo left a mark and failed to earn a permanent contract at Parkhead. Kelechi Iheanacho has accepted Bursaspor’s offer, rejecting the Celts, and the likely departure of wantaway Daizen Maeda would leave a further void high up the pitch. Camilo Duran has been roped in from Qarabağ, but the Colombian is primarily viewed as Maeda’s like-for-like replacement, given his flexibility and work ethic across the frontline.

The 25-year-old Denmark international progressed through Vorup and Randers’ academy ranks before breaking into the latter’s first-team squad back in his homeland. He also had a brief loan stint with Valur in Iceland but was eventually offloaded to Hobro in the Danish 1st Division. Top-flight outfit AaB snapped him up six months later, before letting him leave for Norwegian side Stabæk.

Signing The Dane Would Be A Statement From Celtic

Høgh’s emergence as a ‘number 9’ caught the eye of Bodø/Glimt, who spent €700k to secure his services ahead of the 2024 season. He has so far netted 54 goals and assisted 22 times in 103 appearances for Superlaget, who would demand more than £7m for their prized asset. Celtic must splash the cash this summer amid growing frustration over the lack of transfer activity, and an ambitious move for the Danish ace should appease the fans, even though the champions require significant reinforcements to overcome their mediocrity.

Despite conquering the ‘domestic double,’ O’Neill reiterated the need for board backing. Besides Duran, they currently have Callum Osmand and Johnny Kenny in their ranks. But the growing interest in Kenny from south of the border could leave them with little depth up top. Osmand, having shown glimpses of his quality in an injury-ravaged campaign, is expected to be involved more frequently. Nevertheless, tying down a proven goalscorer of Høgh’s calibre would be a statement of intent, particularly after a couple of dreadful transfer windows.

Highly regarded for his physical presence, link-up play, and penalty-box finishing, the Bodø/Glimt sensation should slot in as the targetman in O’Neill’s 4-2-3-1 setup. Duran could be utilised from the wide if Høgh spearheads the attack, and it remains to be seen whether the Celts strike a deal with the Norwegian giants in due time.
