Chelsea FC Faces Backlash Over Enzo Fernández World Cup Post
Chelsea FC published a social media post on Wednesday celebrating one of its players scoring a goal in the World Cup.
Simple enough, right? Not so much.
The post, shared across multiple platforms, highlighted a goal scored by Enzo Fernández. Playing for Argentina, Fernández netted an equalizer that set the stage for Argentina’s 2-1 semifinal comeback win, which eliminated England from the World Cup.

However, the post sparked a backlash among Chelsea’s English fanbase.
Here’s a screenshot of the post that went live during Wednesday’s game and, as reported by multiple media outlets including the UK’s Daily Mail, the post was deleted shortly after England’s elimination was confirmed.
The online response to the post was reportedly intense.
Compounding the issue for Chelsea, there are uncertainties regarding Fernández’s future with the club. Earlier this year, he expressed a desire to live in Madrid amid rumors linking him to Real Madrid, stating his preference for living in Spain.
This situation led to Chelsea handing him a two-game suspension. While Fernández is under contract with Chelsea until 2032, Real Madrid has denied any engagement in talks with Fernández or interest in the midfielder.

Despite this, rumors continue about his potential exit. These factors, along with Fernández’s role in eliminating England’s beloved Three Lions, contributed to Chelsea fans’ negative reaction to seeing his image on social media Wednesday.
