China Censors Real Madrid Match Following Kylian Mbappe’s Mao Joke

Headline: Kylian Mbappé’s Comments Spark Broadcast Suspension in China Amid Apology

Chinese state broadcaster CCTV refrained from airing Real Madrid’s La Liga match against Racing Santander on Sunday, following controversy surrounding Kylian Mbappé’s remarks about former Chinese leader Mao Zedong. This decision came despite Mbappé’s public apology addressing the contentious comments he made during a French television program.

Last week, the French striker caused an uproar after he humorously referenced a meme featuring his image alongside that of a Chinese dictator resembling Mao, without mentioning the leader by name. Following a backlash in China, where Mao’s legacy is deeply revered and any mockery is considered taboo, the Chinese foreign ministry responded to Mbappé’s apology, affirming its seriousness through spokesman Guo Jiakun.

Mbappé, the captain of the French national team, acknowledged that his words were “ill-judged,” expressing regret for any hurt they may have caused in China and among Chinese communities globally. The controversy has led to a significant backlash in China, particularly given Mao’s controversial history, which includes responsibility for policies resulting in mass suffering.

CCTV’s parent company, China Media Group (CMG), previously announced the suspension of La Liga broadcasts, insisting on formal apologies from Mbappé, Real Madrid, and the league as essential for resolving the issue. After all parties issued apologies, CMG recognized these but has yet to clarify when broadcasting might resume.

The fallout from this incident has also impacted Mbappé financially, with several Chinese brands terminating their sponsorship agreements with him. Meanwhile, on the field, Real Madrid secured a 3-0 victory against Racing Santander, with contributions from Mbappé himself, along with teammates Jude Bellingham and Yan Diomande.

China represents a significant market for European football, with CCTV also broadcasting matches from the Premier League and major leagues from Germany, France, and Italy. Last week, La Liga president Javier Tebas convened a crisis team and met with the Chinese ambassador in efforts to manage the evolving situation.

Real Madrid’s manager, José Mourinho, commented on the carefulness needed in today’s world where every statement can carry weight, while also highlighting Mbappé’s responsible approach to the team. He expressed satisfaction with how both the club and the player have handled the matter.
