Jorge Jesus Stands Firm on Cristiano Ronaldo’s Exit from Portugal National Team
Following Cristiano Ronaldo’s exit from the Portugal national team after 23 years of service, coach Jorge Jesus addressed the controversy surrounding their relationship, stating he has no regrets about his coaching decisions.
During a recent press conference, Jesus was questioned about whether he would alter his handling of the situation involving the Al Nassr forward.
His reply was straightforward: he prioritized the team’s performance and the overall interests of the national squad.
The Portuguese coach defended his actions concerning the disagreements he experienced with Ronaldo during the last team camp.
The conflict originated when Ronaldo warmed up for a match against Norway but did not actually play. This led to the forward expressing frustration and leaving the camp without permission from the coaching staff.
This incident resulted in a 30-day suspension imposed by the Portuguese Football Federation and later culminated in Ronaldo’s announcement of his retirement from international football.
Jorge Jesus Says He Wouldn’t Change Anything About Cristiano Ronaldo Situation
When pressed about whether he would adjust any of his decisions, Jorge Jesus stated definitively:
“I wouldn’t change anything, absolutely nothing. I made a decision as a coach, putting the interests of my team and the Portugal national team first.”
The coach expressed confidence that his choices did not force Portugal’s all-time leading scorer to leave the team. “I am convinced that I did nothing that caused what happened,” he remarked.
Despite their differences, Jorge Jesus previously noted that he tried to persuade Cristiano Ronaldo to continue his international career.
In an interview with Canal 11, he revealed that he approached the forward before announcing his first squad list, urging him to stay part of the national team’s future plans.
“I asked him to continue, to continue with me because I needed to have him by my side, but I have to accept his decision,” he shared.
Cristiano Ronaldo announced his retirement in a video on social media, concluding a stellar 23-year tenure with the national team.
He leaves the stage with an impressive record of 234 appearances and 146 goals, along with notable achievements including the 2016 Euro championship and the Nations League titles in 2019 and 2025.
