Real Madrid’s Denzel Dumfries Urges Team to Prioritize Rest Amid Heavy Workload

Denzel Dumfries Emphasizes Need for Recovery at Sports Medicine Summit

Real Madrid defender Denzel Dumfries recently addressed the importance of rest and recovery for professional footballers during the XV Sports Global Medicine Summit at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium. The event, organized by the Sports Doctor Network, also featured Real Madrid’s head of medical department, Dr. Niko Mihic.

In his remarks, Dumfries acknowledged the demanding nature of the modern football schedule, where players compete nearly every three days at the club level and represent their national teams during off-seasons. He stated, “We need to rest; we play a lot of matches…” as reported by AS.

Dumfries underscored the significance of both rest and sleep for athletes, asserting, “Sleep is crucial; we need to recover as quickly as possible, and sleep is one of the most powerful tools we [footballers] have to achieve that and to take care of our bodies.”

At 30 years old, Dumfries boasts an active career spanning 12 years across various leagues, including his time in the Netherlands, Italy, and now Spain. He noted that the fixture calendar has expanded year after year, posing challenges for professional players. Highlighting rest and sleep, he elaborated on their roles as essential tools for athletes facing these pressures.

In other news about Dumfries, the defender joined Real Madrid in the summer after the club activated his €20 million release clause from Inter Milan. He stepped in as a replacement for former club captain Dani Carvajal, who departed after his contract expired at the end of last season.

Since his arrival at the Merengues, Dumfries has made 11 appearances across various competitions, contributing one assist. Despite showing promise, he has yet to fully impress Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho, who has occasionally favored Federico Valverde in the right-back position this season.
