Derry City Draw 2-2 Against Sligo Rovers in Final Match of Premier Division Season
Derry City concluded their Premier Division season with a 2-2 draw against Sligo Rovers, who have already been relegated, in a match that featured a transformed lineup.
In the first half, the hosts took control of the game with goals from Gareth McElroy and Ryan O’Kane, establishing a solid lead by halftime.
However, the match turned after Sligo’s Kaiyne Woolery received a red card shortly after the interval. Derry City capitalized on their numerical advantage, as 17-year-old Terence Doherty scored two late goals, earning his team a point.
With the draw, Derry City finished the season in fifth position, accumulating 48 points over 36 matches. Their attention will now shift to the upcoming FAI Cup final against Waterford, set to take place at Aviva Stadium on Sunday, 8 November.
McElroy began the scoring in the 25th minute at the Showgrounds by netting his second goal of the season after Sligo failed to clear a free-kick. O’Kane extended the lead in the 37th minute with an impressive strike before Woolery was sent off just three minutes into the second half.
Doherty found the net in the 77th minute to start Derry’s comeback, then followed up with a header five minutes later to level the score.
