Billy Sharp Returns from Retirement to Play for AFC Rushden & Diamonds in FA Cup
Billy Sharp has announced his decision to return from retirement to play for AFC Rushden & Diamonds in the FA Cup, inspired by what he describes as “a story that’s too hard to turn down.” The 40-year-old striker, who had previously retired last month, has changed his mind following the suspension of Diamonds forward James Clifton ahead of Saturday’s match against League One side Burton Albion.
The current Northern Premier League team, established in 2011 after the original Rushden & Diamonds folded, will make its debut in the first round proper of the FA Cup. Sharp expressed his excitement about the opportunity, stating that the invitation to join the club “made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up” during an interview with BBC Radio Northampton.
He expressed his determination, saying, “I thought, you know what, I’ve got nothing to lose. Rushden’s got nothing to lose. We’re going to be the underdogs and we’ve got everything to gain, and it’s a great day out for the fans.”
If Sharp plays in the upcoming tie at Pirelli Stadium, it will mark his 814th professional appearance and provide him a chance to score his 300th career goal. “I’m not going to shy away from it,” he admitted, adding that the prospect of reaching such a milestone was a significant factor in his decision to return to the field. “I’m hoping for that one chance, and if I can put it away and it can be a part of a cup upset, then I’d be absolutely delighted.”
Sharp has a deep connection to the Diamonds, having scored his first career goal while on loan there in 2005. Reflecting on his return, he noted, “The story might not end in the way I want it to, but if I could get the 300th for the club where I got my first, that just seemed like the book would be closed and it’d be an amazing end to a career I’m already proud of.”
In a historical context, Rushden & Diamonds were formed in 1992 after the merger of Rushden Town and Irthlingborough Diamonds, driven by local businessman Max Griggs’ ambition to establish a single club in the Football League. The club achieved its goal in 2001 but faced challenges that led to its decline. By 2011, financial issues forced them out of the Conference and resulted in the club’s eventual folding.
With the club now under the AFC Rushden & Diamonds banner, they are set to make their FA Cup debut, marking a new chapter in the club’s storied history.
