Enzo Maresca Defends Manchester City After Disappointing Performance Against Brighton

Headline: Manchester City Suffer Consecutive Premier League Losses with 1-0 Defeat to Brighton

Manchester City experienced their first back-to-back defeats in the Premier League since Enzo Maresca took over as manager in June. Following a 2-1 loss to Aston Villa a week ago, City fell to Brighton 1-0 on Saturday, all while dealing with the ramifications of a recent independent commission’s guilty verdict on 114 out of 115 charges against the club.

This loss came just three days after City managed a 2-2 draw with Brighton’s Fabian Hürzeler in the Carabao Cup’s fourth round, with Geronimo Rulli stepping up to save two penalties, securing a narrow 4-3 victory in the shootout.

Saturday’s match marked a stark contrast, as Brighton dominated the game and secured all three points, moving to within two points of City in the league standings.

In a post-match interview with BBC Sport, Maresca examined the two encounters against Brighton, stating, “The amount of chances we created and the chances we conceded, if you analyse the two games I think we just conceded the three chances they scored [from] and no more. But, in this moment, it’s like this, and we need to move on and try to win games.”

Yasin Ayari netted the only goal of the match in the 11th minute, converting a move that began with a quick free-kick from Lewis Dunk following a misjudged clearance from Matheus Nunes inside the Manchester City penalty area.

When asked about his side’s reaction to conceding early, Maresca commented, “I thought the reaction was good. We were in control, especially second half. In this moment, it’s like this and we need to just improve and move on.” He noted that while his team had much of the game in Brighton’s half, they needed to display more clinical finishing in the box.

Efforts by Iliman Ndiaye, who headed wide from an Elliot Anderson cross and later struck the woodwork early in the second half, highlighted Brighton’s pressing. Meanwhile, Brighton’s Bart Verbruggen made seven crucial saves to preserve the team’s clean sheet against City.

Maxim De Cuyper lacked the opportunity to widen Brighton’s lead in the 48th minute and was off target from close range, just moments after Gianluigi Donnarumma had blocked Diego Gomez’s close-range attempt before halftime.

Maresca introduced Rayan Cherki, Phil Foden, Allan Elias, and Nico O’Reilly in the second half as City strived for an equalizer, but Verbruggen thwarted efforts from both Nunes and Jeremy Doku in stoppage time. This match marked Brighton’s first-ever victory over Manchester City in 18 attempts.

The loss halted City’s impressive streak of scoring in 24 consecutive Premier League matches and marked the first occurrence of back-to-back league defeats since August 2025. Despite this, Manchester City remains on top of the Premier League table, leading by goal difference, while Brighton sits just two points behind. Arsenal could leapfrog City with a non-defeat against Liverpool on Sunday.

Looking ahead, City prepares to face Nottingham Forest next weekend, their final league game before the November international break. They will also look to regain form when they meet RB Leipzig in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday night.
