Everton Clinches 1-0 Victory Over Newcastle with Barry’s Goal
Everton marked a successful return to the Premier League, defeating Newcastle 1-0 at St James’ Park thanks to a second-half goal from Thierno Barry. This victory came after their recent 3-1 win over Newcastle in the Carabao Cup fourth round.
The first half of the match featured few clear chances, but the decisive moment unfolded shortly after the break when Barry netted his fourth league goal of the season, converting after Lukas Hornicek couldn’t handle a low shot from Tyrique George.
Newcastle faced additional frustration in the closing minutes when substitute Jacob Ramsey received two quick yellow cards, leaving the team with only ten players. This loss dropped Newcastle to 13th place in the Premier League standings, and the home crowd expressed their discontent, booing the team at both half-time and full-time, increasing the pressure on manager Matthias Jaissle.
Both teams made two changes to their starting line-ups for the match. For Newcastle, Anthony Elanga and Joelinton came into the side, while Everton brought in Jarrad Branthwaite and Harrison Armstrong.
Newcastle’s Harvey Barnes displayed energy on the left side, curling a shot wide and creating opportunities, but the breakthrough remained elusive for both teams as a series of attempts were thwarted. James Tarkowski blocked a shot from Joelinton, while Merlin Rohl’s shot went over the bar as both squads searched for scoring chances.
As the first half progressed, Everton began to threaten with late attempts, though they were unable to convert until the second half. Just four minutes after the restart, Barry scored the opener following a VAR check for offside after the initial shot slipped under Hornicek.
Despite Everton’s advantage, Hornicek stepped up, making saves against Branthwaite’s header and further shots from the visitors as they pushed for a second goal. Newcastle attempted to respond, with Schar shooting over and Pickford successfully stopping headers from Willock and Murphy.
In a dramatic finish, Ramsey’s late dismissal capped a frustrating evening for Newcastle, allowing Everton to secure a vital three points.
