Heart of Midlothian Announces Departure of Schwolow, Welcomes Reus
Heart of Midlothian has confirmed the upcoming departure of goalkeeper Alexander Schwolow, who is set to return to Germany with Mainz on August 1. Schwolow, 34, has spent one season at Tynecastle.
In his place, the club has signed Dutch goalkeeper Beau Reus, 24, as a free agent on a three-year contract. Reus has been with Belgian club Beveren for the past four seasons and helped them secure the second-tier Challenger Pro League title last year.
Standing tall at 6 feet, 6 inches, Reus is expected to bring a strong presence to the squad. Schwolow, a former keeper for Freiburg and Hertha Berlin, is leaving for an undisclosed fee after making 33 appearances for Hearts and keeping 15 clean sheets as the team finished as runners-up in the Scottish Premiership.
Hearts have described Schwolow as a “much-valued member of the squad,” but have agreed to his request to move closer to home. Following the retirement of Craig Gordon and Liam McFarlane’s loan to Partick Thistle, Ryan Fulton and Zander Clark remain the only other goalkeepers with first team experience for new head coach Wouter Vrancken.
