Umut Tohumcu Joins RB Salzburg on Loan from TSG Hoffenheim

TSG Hoffenheim midfielder Umut Tohumcu will spend another season away from the Bundesliga, having finalized a loan agreement with Austrian football club RB Salzburg. Both teams announced the transfer on Friday evening. The 22-year-old will play for Salzburg during the 2026/27 season, which includes a purchase option for the Austrian side. Tohumcu remains under contract with Hoffenheim until 2028.

This move marks another chapter in the evolving career of the Germany youth international. Last season, Tohumcu spent the second half on loan with Holstein Kiel, where he made 13 appearances in the 2. Bundesliga and scored once. His time with Kiel followed a challenging period in Hoffenheim, where he faced stiff competition in the midfield and struggled to secure a starting position.

The beginning of the 2025/26 season was a different story for Tohumcu. As highlighted in Get German Football News’ Hoffenheim tactical preview, he started the season as one of the club’s promising midfield talents, impressing fans during preseason matches.

He excelled after replacing the injured Wouter Burger in Hoffenheim’s opening match against Bayer Leverkusen and received a call-up to the Germany U21 squad in September. However, his progress slowed over the fall, leading to the loan to Kiel where he could gain vital playing time.

Statements on Umut Tohumcu’s Latest Departure

Tohumcu participated in Hoffenheim’s entire preseason this summer, but both the club and the player concluded that a loan to Salzburg would be best for his growth.

“Umut completed the entire preseason with us and we have spoken intensively and very openly over the past few weeks about his further sporting development,” Hoffenheim managing director for sport Andreas Schicker stated. “Together, we came to the conclusion that the loan to Salzburg is currently an excellent opportunity for him.”

“Salzburg offers Umut the opportunity to gain regular match practice and continue developing in an ambitious environment,” Schicker added. “The international perspective also makes this step particularly valuable for him.”

Tohumcu expressed enthusiasm for the challenge ahead. “It’s certainly a big club that is always competing for the league title and also plays a role internationally,” he said. “I want to be fully involved, help the team and also learn.”

With 46 Bundesliga appearances for Hoffenheim and last season’s loan with Kiel behind him, Tohumcu now aims to convert his long-standing potential into consistent first-team contributions at Salzburg.

TSG Hoffenheim midfielder Umut Tohumcu will spend another season away from the Bundesliga after completing a loan move to Austrian giants RB Salzburg. Both clubs confirmed the transfer on Friday evening. The 22-year-old joins Salzburg for the 2026/27 campaign, with the Austrian club also securing a purchase option. Tohumcu remains under contract with Hoffenheim through 2028.

The move represents the next step in an increasingly winding development path for the Germany youth international. Tohumcu spent the second half of last season on loan at Holstein Kiel, making 13 2. Bundesliga appearances and scoring once. The temporary switch came after Tohumcu struggled to establish himself amid intense competition in Hoffenheim’s midfield.

That represented a significant reversal from the beginning of the 2025/26 campaign. As discussed in Get German Football News’ Hoffenheim tactical preview, Tohumcu entered the season as one of the club’s promising young midfielders and impressed during preseason.

He subsequently performed well after replacing the injured Wouter Burger during Hoffenheim’s opening-day victory over Bayer Leverkusen and returned to the Germany U21 squad in September. His momentum nevertheless faded over the autumn months before the Kiel loan offered him more regular football.

Statements on Umut Tohumcu’s latest departure

Tohumcu completed Hoffenheim’s entire preseason this summer before the club and player ultimately decided another move represented the best option for his development.

“Salzburg offers Umut the opportunity to gain regular match practice and continue developing in an ambitious environment,” Schicker added. “The international perspective also makes this step particularly valuable for him.”

Tohumcu himself welcomes the increased expectations.

“It’s certainly a big club that is always competing for the league title and also plays a role internationally,” Tohumcu said. “I want to be fully involved, help the team and also learn.”

After 46 Bundesliga appearances for Hoffenheim and last season’s Kiel loan, Salzburg now provides Tohumcu with another opportunity to translate his long-recognized potential into a sustained first-team role.
