Juric Praises Monza’s Performance Before Napoli Gifted Goals

Headline: Monza’s Juric Reflects on Defeat Against Napoli, Praises Varela’s Performance

Ivan Juric remarked that Monza delivered an “excellent first half,” yet ultimately fell to a 4-1 defeat against Napoli. He highlighted the promising potential of Gustavo Varela, saying, “he will certainly go far.”

Monza had recently shown signs of improvement, securing victories in their previous two matches at the U-Power Stadium against Sassuolo and Cagliari, and aimed to leverage that momentum against Napoli.

When Rasmus Hojlund broke his goal drought to put Napoli ahead, Monza responded with a glancing header from Varela off a Jay Robinson cross to equalize. However, the match took a turn after halftime as Matteo Politano, Rafa Marin, and Kevin De Bruyne capitalized on defensive lapses to secure Napoli’s victory.

Juric Sees Monza Positives

“The first half performance was excellent and perhaps we deserved even more than being at 1-1,” Juric stated in an interview with Sky Sport Italia. He noted that his team started the second half well but began to “gift goals,” which proved detrimental. Juric emphasized that while the result was disappointing, there were still many aspects to build upon.

Varela has emerged as a standout player this Serie A season, netting eight goals in his first eight league appearances and adding two more in his debut Coppa Italia match. This performance has led to speculation about interest from Premier League clubs ahead of the January transfer window, with Monza having acquired him from Benfica for a mere €2.5 million in July.

“He’s a talented player and has real margin for improvement. He is working every day to get stronger, and I hope he continues like this, stays humble, and then he will certainly go far,” Juric concluded.
