Headline: Karlsruher SC’s Senft Finds Personal Inspiration in Victory Over Heidenheim
Karlsruher SC head coach Maximilian Senft celebrated a particularly significant win on Saturday evening. After his team’s hard-fought 2-1 victory against 1. FC Heidenheim, the Austrian trainer revealed that opposing coach Frank Schmidt served as an early inspiration for his career in football management.
During the post-match press conference at Wildparkstadion, Senft shared how he was influenced by Schmidt’s role in the acclaimed 2013 German football documentary Trainer!, directed by Aljoscha Pause.

This revelation added a personal touch to an eventful night for Karlsruhe. Senft’s team had secured their first win out of the relegation zone, marking only their third league victory of the season.
Senft Recalls Frank Schmidt’s Influence
Toward the conclusion of his opening remarks, Senft addressed Schmidt directly, reflecting on the significance of the three points earned. He said, “Frank, I’d like to wish you a safe journey home,” before sharing a personal memory. “Just on a personal note, I mentioned this before the match as well. I started my coaching career approximately ten years ago. I don’t know how many of you are familiar with the film Trainer!, but Frank was one of the main protagonists.”

“He was one of the first coaching personalities that inspired me along my journey,” Senft added. “So, irrespective of the result, this was a very special match for me today. And, of course, I’m very happy for our team that we managed to win it.”
His comments prompted a heartfelt moment during the press conference. Schmidt, who had mostly maintained a stoic demeanor, broke into a brief smile and offered Senft a supportive pat on the back in acknowledgment of the tribute.
It was a small but meaningful gesture underscoring the personal significance of Senft’s words.
The Documentary That Shaped Senft’s Career
Released in June 2013, Aljoscha Pause’s Trainer! provided an intimate look at the demands and pressures of professional football management in Germany. The documentary followed three young coaches during the 2012/13 season: Frank Schmidt at 1. FC Heidenheim, André Schubert at FC St. Pauli, and Stephan Schmidt at SC Paderborn.

The film showcased the unique challenges faced by these coaches in the lower divisions of German football, allowing viewers to see the profession beyond the elite Bundesliga. It documented how managers motivated their players, handled disappointing performances, and balanced their ambitions with significant external expectations.
Produced in collaboration with German public broadcaster WDR, the documentary is approximately 139 minutes long and received critical acclaim for its detailed portrayal of football coaching.
For young Senft, the film clearly provided more than just entertainment. It introduced him to coaching personalities whose careers would shape his own aspirations.
Particularly notable was Schmidt’s role—when the documentary was filmed, Heidenheim competed in the 3. Liga, well removed from the Bundesliga. Schmidt was already laying the groundwork for what would ultimately lead the club to rise through the German football ranks.

The transformation of Heidenheim into a Bundesliga club only further emphasizes the potential impact Schmidt’s example could have on young, aspiring coaches.
Senft Secures Vital Victory Over One of His Mentors
Saturday’s match created an intriguing dynamic between two coaches at different stages of their careers.
Senft’s journey commenced in Austrian lower-league football, followed by analytical and assistant coaching roles at Austria Wien and Wolfsberger AC. He later accompanied Gerhard Struber to English Championship club Barnsley in 2019, and had a stint coaching FC Südburgenland in the Austrian women’s Bundesliga.

In 2022, Senft took charge of SV Ried’s reserve team, earning a promotion to head coach of the senior team in March 2023. He kept his position despite relegation, which ultimately bore fruit. Senft led Ried back to the top division as second-division champions in 2024/25 and solidified their standing in the Austrian Bundesliga.
This success led to his appointment at Karlsruher SC in the summer of 2026. However, the transition came with significant challenges as he followed Christian Eichner, a well-established figure in the club who had held the head coach position for nearly seven years.
Taking over from someone so deeply connected to the club was inevitably complex. Senft’s initial months in Germany proved difficult, and Karlsruhe entered Saturday’s match at the bottom of the 2. Bundesliga table, having only managed two wins from their first nine league games.
Thus, the win over Heidenheim was not just a personal moment for Senft. It offered a crucial opportunity to build momentum and ease the pressure surrounding his team’s rocky start. Karlsruhe showcased their determination, initially taking the lead through Tim Civeja before captain Marvin Wanitzek added a spectacular second-half free kick.

Heidenheim found the net late in the game, but Karlsruhe held on for all three points. Schmidt acknowledged that Karlsruhe had been the stronger team and deserved their victory in his own remarks.
Senft, however, remained grounded about the result, stating that there is still a lot of work to be done as they prepare for their next match against VfL Bochum.
The evening represented a moment of personal fulfillment for Senft. For a coach who had once admired Schmidt’s insights on screen, defeating one of his early inspirations marked another important milestone in his own career journey.
For Schmidt, while his post-match evaluation was filled with disappointment and frustration, the brief smile and congratulatory gesture from the younger coach served as a reminder that football’s influences extend beyond the outcomes of individual matches.
