Leeds Condemns Alleged Racist Abuse Directed at Jayden Bogle After Mathys Tel Tackle

Leeds United Condemns Racist Abuse Targeting Jayden Bogle Following Match Against Tottenham Hotspur

Leeds United has expressed strong condemnation of the online racist abuse directed at defender Jayden Bogle after the team’s 1-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Elland Road on Saturday.

Bogle remained unpunished by referee John Brooks despite a first-half tackle in which he made contact with the Achilles of Spurs attacker Mathys Tel. A lengthy VAR review concluded that no serious foul play occurred during the incident.

In a statement released on Sunday, Leeds United stated, “Leeds United Football Club are appalled at the disgusting, racist social media abuse Jayden Bogle suffered following Saturday’s Premier League victory against Tottenham Hotspur.” The club emphasized, “There is no place for racism in football or society,” reaffirming their commitment to addressing such behavior.

The club announced plans to collaborate with the Premier League and relevant authorities to identify those responsible for the abuse and seek appropriate action against them. “Jayden has the full and unconditional support of the club and his team-mates, and we all stand with him at this time. Nobody should ever be subjected to racist abuse,” they added.

Tottenham Hotspur also voiced their dismay regarding the abusive messages. They offered Leeds United their assistance in identifying the perpetrators and pledged to pursue all available measures to ensure accountability.

The Premier League extended its support by stating on X, “Anybody found guilty of committing discriminatory abuse will face club bans and criminal prosecution.”

After Bogle’s tackle on Tel, the latter received extensive medical care and was substituted for Dominic Solanke. Tottenham plans to contact Pro Ref for clarification on why Bogle did not receive a red card following the incident.

In the post-match press conference, Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi expressed frustration over the officiating but avoided directly commenting on whether Bogle warranted a red card. He also confirmed that the club was awaiting updates on the extent of Tel’s injury.

With Tel’s exit, Leeds secured their victory through a late goal from Noah Okafor, ending Tottenham’s three-match winning streak.
