Iraola’s Evolving Project Faces Ultimate Test: Are Liverpool Back?

Headline: Arteta and Iraola Reflect on Past and Present as Liverpool Faces Arsenal

On May 20, Andoni Iraola and Mikel Arteta had a conversation celebrating a significant milestone in their careers. Arteta had just led Arsenal to their first Premier League title in 22 years, thanks in part to Iraola’s Bournemouth holding Manchester City. This left Arsenal four points ahead with one game remaining. “We spoke the next day just to congratulate each other because it was massive for us as we got Europe,” Iraola stated.

However, the dynamic has shifted as Iraola now stands as a hurdle in Arteta’s path. The former allies are now competitors, with Iraola holding three wins in their last four encounters. “It doesn’t mean a lot,” he said, suggesting that with new players and a different team, the context has changed. Where they were once underdogs, they may now be perceived as equals.

While discussions of title aspirations are often rife, there’s a prevailing opinion that should Arsenal falter, Liverpool could emerge as the champions. Although Manchester City is seen as a threat, potential points deductions loom over them. Liverpool has already suffered a loss to City at Anfield, while a victory over Arsenal could narrow the points gap significantly.

Iraola remains focused on the present, downplaying title talks. “It is too early to start looking at the standings,” he remarked. The prospect of a Liverpool title run seems distant, given their struggle last season that left them trailing Arsenal by 25 points. After appointing Iraola, who has a reputation for enhancing player performance but not necessarily winning trophies, Liverpool started inauspiciously this season.

“The two draws at the beginning condition everything else,” Iraola noted, reflecting on the team’s slow start. Despite Liverpool’s current five-match winning streak, he acknowledges that not all victories have come in the Premier League. He admits that their offensive threat in the league has been less formidable.

Yet, there are positive signs, particularly from Alexander Isak, who has scored six goals in his last six league appearances. The team’s wingers have also shown impressive productivity, with a combined tally of eight goals and nine assists. In their upcoming match against Arsenal, Iraola may benefit from wider options, particularly in the absence of several key Arsenal players.

Iraola has also implemented tactical elements reminiscent of Arteta’s strategies, notably in set-piece defenses. “I think we have, touch wood, dealt very well with defending set-pieces this season,” he said. The adjustment of personnel, including deploying center-backs in defensive roles, has also contributed to improved stability.

Despite recent defensive solidity, Iraola recognizes that improvement is still necessary. His team continues to evolve, working towards a goal of Champions League qualification rather than a title challenge, especially in a season that many did not foresee as a title opportunity for them.

“It is still too early to take big conclusions,” Iraola concluded, emphasizing the ongoing journey of development ahead of their next challenge against Arsenal.
