Liverpool and Arsenal Eye Borussia Dortmund’s Daniel Svensson in Transfer Battle

Liverpool and Arsenal are reportedly engaged in a competitive transfer pursuit of Borussia Dortmund’s Daniel Svensson, whose reputation for impacting games from various positions on the left is on the rise.

As per Caught Offside, Liverpool has moved Svensson to the top of their transfer wishlist, having developed a “concrete plan to sign the Borussia Dortmund star.” This phrasing indicates that Liverpool’s interest has evolved from casual admiration to a focused attempt to reinforce their left side of defense.

Svensson’s versatility is particularly appealing. He is noted for playing as a left-back, wing-back, or in midfield, making him an attractive target for top clubs. His ability to contribute in varying roles fits well with modern systems, especially those that emphasize control and structure in possession.

    Svensson Meets Liverpool’s Immediate Needs

Liverpool’s interest is amplified by their pressing requirements. The report highlights the club’s desire for “a dynamic long-term option capable of providing energy and progression from the left.” Svensson’s “energy, technical quality, and willingness to move centrally” align well with these needs.

Arsenal’s interest, meanwhile, appears to focus more on squad depth, reflecting the need for versatility during a long domestic and European season. This keeps them in contention, but Liverpool’s urgent requirements could provide them with a competitive edge as negotiations progress.

    Dortmund Maintains Strong Negotiating Position

Any transfer, however, is expected to be complex. Borussia Dortmund only finalized Svensson’s move from FC Nordsjælland in 2025 and secured him until June 2029, giving them a solid leverage in negotiations.

His current market value is estimated between €35m and €45m, although increased interest might drive the total closer to €50m. With additional clubs like AC Milan, Juventus, and Real Madrid expressing interest, Dortmund shows no signs of lowering their asking price unless a club meets their valuation.

This situation becomes delicate for Liverpool, who may value Svensson as a long-term asset but will also need to avoid excessive expenditures in the transfer market.

    Analyzing the Situation

From Liverpool’s viewpoint, this potential acquisition makes sense on paper, despite some uncertainties. Svensson embodies the qualities modern Liverpool teams often seek: tactical flexibility, energy, and the ability to transition into midfield. If Liverpool genuinely have a “concrete plan to sign the Borussia Dortmund star,” they must see significant potential in his profile.

However, a cautious supporter might question the price. While acquiring him for €35m to €45m seems reasonable, exceeding €50m raises concerns, especially for a player still establishing himself at the top level. Liverpool values quality but must also ensure they remain sharp in the market.

Ultimately, the strongest aspect of this report lies in its tactical rationale. A player with the qualities mentioned does appear well-suited to Liverpool’s needs on the left side. The challenge remains whether competition from Arsenal and other top clubs inflates the price beyond feasibility.

If Liverpool envisions Svensson as their long-term solution, there is merit in acting swiftly and decisively. Otherwise, supporters might rightly question whether this could turn into an “overpriced gamble” rather than the savvy business it currently seems to be.
