Romelu Lukaku’s Agent Insists Striker Will Not Settle for Backup Role at Napoli

Romelu Lukaku’s agent, Federico Pastorello, emphasized that the Belgian striker will not accept a backup position at Napoli, stating, “He isn’t the kind of person who stays where he’s not wanted.”

Pastorello spoke to Sky Sport Italia on Friday night, addressing his client’s circumstances at the club.

Lukaku is set to begin his third season at the Stadio Maradona, but he has less than a year remaining on his contract.

His on-field participation has been limited, as he played just 64 minutes at the club level during the 2025-26 season, largely due to a significant muscle injury sustained in pre-season.

Pastorello: Lukaku Will Not Accept Reserve Role

When asked if Lukaku would be willing to be a reserve for Napoli in the 2026-27 season, Pastorello stated, “Obviously not. He’s an extraordinary player, and he’s proved it. He’s one of the most prolific strikers in the world. It’s hard for us to accept a situation like that.”

“There might be an initial pecking order, but ultimately, what happens on the pitch will determine the scenario.”

Pastorello suggested that behind Manna’s comments could be financial factors given the presence of two top-class strikers at the club.

Manna had previously commented on Lukaku’s future, acknowledging the need for a discussion regarding the player’s next steps upon his return from holiday. discuss the next steps once the Belgian returns from holiday.

“Lucca will be coming back as well,” Pastorello added.

“That creates a bit of a stalemate. Currently, the transfer market is at a standstill, and the market for strikers hasn’t truly begun yet. This will lead to a domino effect.”

Lukaku faced backlash from Napoli in March when he opted to train individually in Belgium without the club’s approval.

With his contract set to expire in 2027, there are questions about whether Lukaku would accept a pay cut for an extension.

“Even proposing a contract extension comes with additional costs. It’s not just about the wages. Romelu has earned this level of contract through his accomplishments,” Pastorello commented.

“Perhaps it is not yet the time to extend his contract over a longer period. Last season was not entirely his fault. If he had been allowed to train where he chose, he might have returned sooner and played a pivotal role at the World Cup. Ultimately, Romelu is not someone who remains where he feels unwanted. A club strategy can be entirely valid.”
