Paulo Fonseca Set to Join Sporting CP as Head Coach
Lyon manager Paulo Fonseca and Sporting CP have reached an agreement for the Portuguese head coach to take over at the Lisbon-based club, according to Foot Mercato. Reports from both France and Portugal indicate that Fonseca is Sporting CP’s top choice to replace Rui Borges, following a string of unsatisfactory results under the latter’s management. According to the outlet, Sporting CP will need to finalize negotiations regarding Rui Borges’ contract termination before announcing Fonseca’s appointment. The club aims to have secured Fonseca’s services ahead of their UEFA Champions League match against Shakhtar Donetsk on Tuesday.

Foot Mercato also reports that Sporting CP has not yet reached an agreement with Lyon regarding Fonseca’s exit terms, although the Portuguese club remains optimistic about finalizing a deal. This process is expected to be smooth considering Fonseca’s Lyon contract does not expire until 2027. After Lyon’s recent 2-0 victory against Angers on Sunday, Fonseca expressed uncertainty about whether he will stay with the team for the remainder of the season. Meanwhile, former Juventus manager Thiago Motta has emerged as a potential contender for his successor, according to L’Equipe.
