Headline: Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes Defends Coach Amidst Comeback Win Against Roma
Bruno Fernandes stated that Manchester United’s players “don’t need to save anyone’s job” following their unlikely 3-2 triumph over Roma in the Champions League. The Red Devils achieved a stunning second-half comeback, overcoming a 2-0 deficit to secure their first victory in ten matches.
In his first press conference since being sidelined after publicly criticizing manager Michael Carrick’s tactics during a 4-1 defeat at Como, Fernandes emphasized the importance of the win. After returning to the starting lineup for the Premier League match against Chelsea, the 32-year-old’s penalty goal in the 58th minute sparked the team’s impressive revival, which provided some relief for Carrick under mounting pressure.
When asked if the victory would have implications for Carrick’s future, Fernandes responded to Amazon Prime, “We don’t need to save anyone’s job.” He elaborated, “The club needed that win, the players needed that win. We have been working so hard to get out of this situation all together.”
Fernandes acknowledged the difficulties of the past weeks, mentioning the media speculation and “a lot of lies” surrounding his relationship with the manager. He clarified that his benching came as a consequence of his performance, stating, “If it was, it was right. The manager is the one who makes the decisions.”
Previously, following his comments after the Como match, Fernandes did not play in United’s 3-0 loss to Bournemouth. Reports indicated that he and Carrick held “clear-the-air talks” before Fernandes returned to the team against Chelsea.
In defense of Fernandes, former Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel expressed on BBC Radio 5 Live that often only a small portion of the truth makes it to the media. He expressed hope that Manchester United could move past the recent controversies and focus on winning games.
After securing 12 victories in 17 games last season, Carrick was awarded a two-year contract. However, United’s current situation shows a stark contrast, as they languish in 17th place in the Premier League with just one win from their first nine matches.
Despite expectations for Carrick’s dismissal after the Bournemouth clash, the club decided to give the 45-year-old a chance to rectify the team’s trajectory. Midfielder Youri Tielemans remarked, “There has been a lot of pressure on him and that’s how we repay him, with a comeback like this, big character, big fight.”
The comeback victory marked United’s second win in four Champions League matches this season, improving their standing to 17th in the league table. When asked about Carrick’s future following the win, Tielemans responded, “That’s a different question. The only thing we can do is stick behind him, fight for him and fight for the club.”
Midfielder Kobbie Mainoo added that breaking their winless streak was a relief, stating, “A big sigh of relief, we’ve needed this win for a while and hopefully we can carry it on.”
