Manchester United Stars Return to Training as Youngsters Eye Breakthrough

Manchester United’s senior players have returned to Carrington to begin pre-season training. The squad that gathered on Thursday under the guidance of newly installed head coach Michael Carrick and his coaching staff is only a partial version of the group that will prepare for the 2026-27 Premier League opener against Hull City on August 22.

None of the players who participated in the World Cup have returned yet. Additionally, Dutch defender Matthijs de Ligt continues his recovery from back surgery.

While Andrey Santos and Karl Darlow remain close to completing their respective transfers from Chelsea and Leeds, there is no clarity regarding the prospective move of Ederson from Atalanta. Currently, nine senior players have been spotted at Carrington alongside Carrick.

Because World Cup participants are entitled to three weeks of recovery following their tournament exit, several young prospects are expected to earn opportunities during Manchester United’s first two pre-season friendlies against Wrexham in Helsinki on July 18 and Norwegian side Rosenborg in Trondheim on July 24.

During the previous tournament summer, the first friendly took place a week after the conclusion of Euro 2024. This time, however, matches fall within the final stages of the World Cup. Former boss Erik ten Hag utilized 13 academy players during that period; five others travelled but did not feature. Of those 13, seven have since left the club and five have been loaned out. Only Jack Fletcher, who appeared as a second-half substitute, has remained exclusively at Old Trafford for the last two years.

Fletcher is one of only four from that group to play for the senior side since the trip to Murrayfield, having made three substitute appearances. Toby Collyer (13 appearances), Harry Amass (seven), and Ethan Wheatley (one) complete the list. Participation in Finland or Norway provides no guarantee of a first-team breakthrough, but the young players are eager to make an impression.

Under-21 coach Adam Lawrence revealed late last season that Shea Lacey had become a full member of the senior training squad. While there was summer speculation regarding a loan move, the club holds the 19-year-old in high regard. A potential challenge remains in finding his fit in Carrick’s plans, as the left-footed England Under-20 international typically cuts in from the right.

Ruben Amorim called up Fletcher in November when Kobbie Mainoo was injured, maintaining the club’s record of fielding a home-grown player in every matchday squad since 1937. The 19-year-old made his debut at Aston Villa the following month. Although he featured less frequently after an initial burst of appearances, his ability to dictate the pace of a game makes him an intriguing prospect.

After impressing during the 2024-25 pre-season, Amass later joined Sheffield Wednesday on loan, where he performed well. However, after switching to Norwich in January, a serious hamstring injury prematurely ended his season. The 19-year-old now seeks to prove he has fully recovered and can provide reliable backup to Luke Shaw.

The 22-year-old Czech goalkeeper, who swept Bristol City’s player of the year awards last season, is expected to spend the coming campaign away from Old Trafford to gain regular playing time. Solid performances for United this month will assist him in securing his next move.

Jack Fletcher’s breakthrough continued throughout the season, earning a surprise call-up to the Scotland squad. He made his senior international debut against Bolivia and was eventually named in the squad for the World Cup following Billy Gilmour’s injury. While his involvement in pre-season remains to be determined, he enters the new term with significant momentum.

Despite being under 16, Gabriel has already garnered attention from top European clubs. He claimed both the Premier League and Manchester United Under-18 Player of the Year honors last season. While his physical size poses a slight hurdle for senior football, he is expected to participate in pre-season.

Devaney, who captained United’s Under-21s, impressed during a loan spell with St Mirren in the Scottish Premiership. Although he will join the pre-season tour, multiple clubs are interested in signing him on loan for the upcoming season.
