Aston Villa Set to Sign Johan Manzambi in €70 Million Deal

Johan Manzambi is nearing a move to the Premier League, though he is set to join Aston Villa rather than Newcastle United. The Swiss international and World Cup standout prefers a transfer to the “Villans,” leaving Newcastle United without the signing at the final stage of negotiations.

Newcastle United previously reached an agreement with SC Freiburg earlier this week for a €60 million transfer fee, yet they lacked a full agreement with the player’s representatives. Aston Villa capitalized on this delay. According to reports from ‘The Athletic’, ‘kicker’, and Sky, the Europa League winners have now finalized a deal with SC Freiburg for an overall package worth just under €70 million, including the base fee and potential bonuses. The Bundesliga club allowed the player to choose his next destination, and Manzambi selected Aston Villa.

This decision appears to stem from sporting ambitions. Under manager Unai Emery, the midfielder sees an opportunity to further his development in Birmingham and compete in the Champions League for the first time. Conversely, Newcastle finished the latest Premier League season in 12th place and recently experienced several high-profile departures.

Aston Villa’s pursuit of the Freiburg player became urgent in recent days due to a significant roster gap. The club must replace midfielder Amadou Onana, who sustained a serious cruciate ligament injury during the World Cup. Manzambi is expected to sign a long-term contract with the Birmingham side, with his mandatory medical examination reportedly scheduled for the near future.
