Olympique de Marseille Faces Ongoing Financial Struggles Despite Summer Efforts
Olympique de Marseille continues to grapple with significant financial challenges, necessitating further cost-cutting measures to meet commitments to the DNCG and UEFA. Despite attempts over the summer to stabilize the situation, the club conducted a major fire sale and did not secure any new signings. A meeting with the DNCG is scheduled for December, which will play a crucial role in shaping decisions during the upcoming January transfer window. The potential for additional player sales looms large, as financial constraints may hinder the club’s ability to make purchases.
In a bid to further tighten their budget, club officials are actively pursuing savings outside of the transfer window. According to a report from Foot Mercato, efforts to decrease player salaries have not met with success, as players have largely rejected proposals to lower their current earnings.
However, earlier this month, winger Igor Paixao expressed a willingness to consider a pay cut to support the club. “If I have to reduce my salary to help the club, it is the best thing to do… and then increase it. We just have to have a discussion and decide the best way to do that,” he stated. Unfortunately, this willingness has not translated into tangible savings for the financially strapped club.
