Arsenal’s William Saliba Cleared for Return Ahead of Champions League Clash
Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta has announced that defender William Saliba is fit to rejoin the squad, providing a significant boost for the team. Saliba, who played a crucial role in Arsenal’s Premier League title triumph last season, has been sidelined this year due to a back injury he sustained during the World Cup over the summer.
In Saliba’s absence, summer signing Ezri Konsa has excelled, forming a strong partnership with Gabriel in the central defense. Saliba was recently seen back in first-team training, raising hopes of his quick return to action.
Arsenal is set to face Slavia Prague in their upcoming Champions League match on Wednesday. Arteta confirmed during a pre-match press conference that Saliba successfully participated in a closed-door friendly last week without any issues.
“He’s in a really good place,” stated Arteta. “The process and the timings regarding his injury recovery have been very positive. His evolution has gone as we expected, which is not always the case. He feels comfortable after playing 45 minutes in the behind-closed-doors match. Now, it’s about what the team needs regarding whether we deploy him in the match.”
Arsenal secured a narrow 1-0 victory against Liverpool at Anfield over the weekend, marking their first win at that venue in 14 years, with the team also maintaining four consecutive clean sheets in the Premier League.
While it is anticipated that Saliba won’t be rushed back onto the pitch after his lengthy layoff, Arteta indicated that the defender’s minutes won’t be limited. “He’s ready to contribute fully now,” he explained. “He’s prepared to play the full 90 minutes as needed, differing from attackers who can easily be substituted.”
Saliba’s return poses a selection challenge for Arteta as Konsa has thoroughly adapted to his role at Arsenal. The England international could potentially shift to right-back to accommodate Saliba, offering the manager greater tactical flexibility.
Arteta expressed his enthusiasm for the additional options: “Until now, we haven’t had the luxury of such depth – it’s an advantage rather than a problem. With both players fit, we can manage player fatigue more effectively. Ezri can play as both a full-back and a center-back, and the versatility he and Willy offer is a positive for the team.”
