So, the Azteca, it’s just another stadium isn’t it?

For one thing, it holds a place on the top of many people’s bucket lists, myself included, and after a night there watching Mexico triumph in a World Cup clash against Ecuador, I can testify there simply is no venue like it.

Spending a few nights in Mexico City ahead of my visit had already ticked a number of boxes. A vast, sprawling conurbation seasoned in history, passion and a fusion of cultures, this place demands attention but is also mysterious.

The people of the city were overwhelmingly friendly, welcoming football fans from around the world and even as we made our way into the Azteca the random Ecuador fans were treated to simply pantomime boos and wolf whistles.

As the venue filled the atmosphere became more charged as one of the common electrical storms rolled around the area, adding to the sense of mystery and foreboding.

A delay for an hour simply allowed stadium officials to turn this into more of a festival, drowning out the rolling thunder and turning up the tunes, starting the party before a ball had been kicked.

Then, from my seat in the back row, yes the very back row, it went from disco party, to high octane knockout match at the flick of a switch.

But there was something in the charged air of this game which felt positive for the raucous home support.

From the outset the team responded to the constant chants of ‘Mexico, Mexico’ by going on an offensive they never relinquished.

മത്സരം തുടങ്ങുന്നതിന് മുൻപ് പ്രദേശത്ത് അനുഭവപ്പെട്ട ഇടിമിന്നൽ സ്റ്റേഡിയത്തിലെ അന്തരീക്ഷത്തിന് ഒരു നിഗൂഢത നൽകി. ഒരു മണിക്കൂർ വൈകിയ മത്സരം സ്റ്റേഡിയം അധികൃതർ ഒരു ഉത്സവമാക്കി മാറ്റി. സംഗീതവും ആഘോഷവുമായി മത്സരം തുടങ്ങുന്നതിന് മുൻപേ തന്നെ സ്റ്റേഡിയം ആവേശത്തിലായി.

പിന്നീട് അസ്‌ടെക്ക ഒരു ഹൈ-വോൾട്ടേജ് നോക്കൗട്ട് മത്സരത്തിന് സാക്ഷ്യം വഹിച്ചു. ‘മെക്സിക്കോ, മെക്സിക്കോ’ എന്ന ആരാധകരുടെ ആർപ്പുവിളികൾക്ക് ടീം ആക്രമണത്തോടെ മറുപടി നൽകി. ആദ്യ ഗോൾ വന്നപ്പോൾ സ്റ്റേഡിയം ആവേശത്തിരയിലായി. എന്നാൽ രണ്ടാമത്തെ ഗോളിന് ശേഷമുള്ള പ്രതികരണം പറഞ്ഞറിയിക്കാൻ കഴിയാത്തതായിരുന്നു. 60 വർഷത്തെ കായിക പ്രേമത്തിനിടയിൽ ഇത്രയും വലിയൊരു ആവേശം താൻ കണ്ടിട്ടില്ലെന്ന് പറയേണ്ടി വരും.

അസ്‌ടെക്ക ഒരു യഥാർത്ഥ പോരാട്ടഭൂമിയായി മാറി. മത്സരം വിജയിച്ചതോടെ നഗരം ഒന്നടങ്കം ആവേശത്തിലായി. അസ്‌ടെക്കയിൽ നിന്ന് നഗരമധ്യത്തിലേക്ക് മടങ്ങിയപ്പോൾ കണ്ടത് ദേശീയ പതാകയേന്തി ആഹ്ലാദിക്കുന്ന മെക്സിക്കൻ ജനതയെയാണ്. പ്രായഭേദമന്യേ എല്ലാവരും ആ വിജയത്തിൽ അഭിമാനിച്ചു.

അസ്‌ടെക്ക സ്റ്റേഡിയം താൻ കണ്ടതിൽ വെച്ച് ഏറ്റവും മികച്ചതാണ്. 2026-ലെ ലോകകപ്പിനായി ഈ സ്റ്റേഡിയവും ഇവിടുത്തെ ജനങ്ങളും ലോകത്തെ ഏറ്റവും മികച്ച വേദി തങ്ങളാണെന്ന് തെളിയിക്കാൻ ഒരുങ്ങി കഴിഞ്ഞു.
