Lazio Remains Unbeaten at Serie A Summit After 1-1 Draw with Napoli
Lazio extended their unbeaten run at the top of Serie A but faced a challenging match against Napoli, concluding in a 1-1 stalemate. An own goal by Alfonso Pedraza equalized Davide Frattesi’s initial strike, ultimately giving under-pressure Napoli manager Max Allegri a crucial point at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.
Leading up to the match, Allegri found himself in a precarious position following losses to Juventus and Porto. The situation escalated to the point where Aurelio De Laurentiis paid a visit to the training ground, with sporting director Giovanni Manna labeling the team’s performance as “unacceptable.” Gennaro Gattuso, who returned to Napoli after a successful streak of six victories in Serie A, faced a challenging atmosphere as Lazio fans were unable to attend due to safety concerns surrounding the fixture.
Lazio started the match with notable energy. Gustav Isaksen threatened early, shooting just wide in the second minute, and a spectacular save from Napoli’s goalkeeper Vanja Milinković-Savić denied Isaksen’s curling shot in the ninth minute. Later, Šutalo’s header was also thwarted by a high-flying Milinković-Savić.
The visitors broke the deadlock shortly before the half-hour mark. Tijjani Noslin’s swift counterattack set up Frattesi, who entered the box unmarked and deftly slotted the ball past Milinković-Savić, marking his fourth goal of the season.
Lazio’s momentum slowed after losing Šutalo to injury, which allowed Napoli to grow into the contest. They nearly leveled the score in the 42nd minute when Mathias Olivera’s pullback found Rasmus Højlund close to the goal, but Lazio’s Christos Mandas managed to rescue the situation, clearing the effort off the line.
In the second half, Gattuso made a tactical switch, substituting Nuno Tavares. However, the new arrival faced an immediate setback. Just three minutes into the half, Noa Lang’s cross from the left was turned into his own net by Pedraza while attempting to prevent Scott McTominay from getting a volley off.
Napoli pressed for another goal, but Mandas delivered an impressive performance, denying close-range shots from McTominay and Kevin De Bruyne, with Diogo Leite also clearing a near miss off the line. The game opened up further after both teams made additional substitutions. Mandas again stepped up, turning away a low shot from Lorenzo Lucca while Milinković-Savić responded with a key save against Matteo Cancellieri at the opposite end.
As the match concluded, Lazio secured 29 points, keeping them two points ahead of Roma, while Napoli remained on 15 points. This draw marked the first time Napoli salvaged a point after trailing in a match this season, even as they continued to seek their first clean sheet after eight games.
