Newcastle United Face Crucial Season as Manager Eddie Howe Aims for Top Four

The 2025-26 season is one that Newcastle United fans would like to move past quickly. Disappointing Premier League performances saw the Magpies finish the campaign in 12th place, sparking immediate questions about Eddie Howe’s long-term future at the club.

However, the Public Investment Fund backed the English manager, signaling that a return to the Champions League remains the primary objective for the 2026-27 season.

    History Repeating Itself?

The departure of key stars could threaten Newcastle’s European ambitions before the season even begins, echoing the way the Alexander Isak transfer saga hindered the team’s momentum last summer.

Warning signs are visible, with the best betting sites and odds currently listing the Magpies as a 10/1 shot to finish in the top four of the Premier League in 2026-27.

Newcastle have generated significant revenue from player sales, receiving £80 million from Barcelona for Anthony Gordon and £100 million for Tonali departing. Club captain Bruno Guimaraes could also exit, as the Magpies hold out for an £80 million transfer fee.

Replacing the impact of these players will be difficult. Gordon scored a team-high 18 goals in all competitions last season, while Tonali anchored the midfield, averaging 54.10 passes and 1.27 tackles per 90 minutes.

    Period of Transition Required

Newcastle may require a transitional phase, as the squad appeared stagnant throughout the 2025-26 season. Managing only five wins in 17 EPL matches during the second half of the year suggests the team needs fresh talent to revitalize its performance.

The club has recruited goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen from Reims to compete with Nick Pope and Aaron Ramsdale for the starting spot. Meanwhile, Bazoumana Toure is expected to replace Gordon, though the winger may need time to adapt to the Premier League after managing 12 goal involvements in 30 Bundesliga appearances for Hoffenheim last season.

Sean Steur is also nearing a £21 million move to Newcastle, though the 18-year-old faces the difficult task of replacing Tonali.

What Would Represent a Successful Season?

Howe will likely publicly maintain that a European finish is the team’s goal, a target that appears more attainable without the fixture congestion of midweek European matches.

However, visible progress is the main priority. Restoring Newcastle’s high-octane style and aggressive defensive pressure will be viewed as a positive sign. Much of the pressure in the final third rests on Yoane Wissa, whose absence was felt throughout the previous campaign.

Optimism remains high following the World Cup, where the striker looked sharp, scoring three goals in four appearances. While new signings require time to settle, Howe needs a strong start to the season to alleviate pressure on his position.

Establishing stability will be challenging, as the team faces early tests against Liverpool, Tottenham, and Bournemouth within the opening month of the season.
