Palmeiras Advances to Copa do Brasil Final After Penalty Shootout Victory
Palmeiras has secured their spot in the Copa do Brasil final after a thrilling penalty shootout against Vasco at São Januário on Sunday. The match ended with a dramatic conclusion following a rollercoaster of goals and intense play.
During regulation time, Colídio struck first for Vasco, only for Piquerez to equalize before Puma Rodríguez put Vasco ahead with a 2-1 lead. The match remained intensely competitive, with Palmeiras initially dominating the game and coming close to scoring on multiple occasions, including a header from Flaco López that hit the crossbar and a shot from Jhon Arias that rattled the post.
Vasco showcased their clinical finishing when Cuiabano, after a strong move down the left flank, provided a low cross that Colídio converted to give Vasco the lead. Controversy arose during the first half when Palmeiras players argued for a red card after Arias was heavily challenged by Gabriel, but the referee opted for a yellow.
The second half maintained its physical intensity, and Palmeiras equalized with a sensational right-footed strike from Piquerez that found the top corner of the net. As Vasco pushed for a crucial third goal, Puma Rodríguez found the back of the net with a free kick that went through Palmeiras’ defensive wall, making the score 2-1 in their favor.
When it came to the penalty shootout, Palmeiras’ Carlos Miguel emerged as the hero by saving two penalties from Lescano and Andrés Gómez, while Giay was the sole player to miss for Palmeiras. This narrow victory propelled Palmeiras into the final, where they will face Grêmio, who defeated Atlético-MG earlier on Saturday at their Arena MRV.
The final match is set to be a single encounter at the Mané Garrincha stadium in Brasília.
