Pape Gueye Steps Back from National Team After Senegal’s World Cup Exit
Senegal midfielder Pape Gueye has decided to take a break from international football following the Lions of Teranga’s disappointing exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This decision comes after Senegal suffered a dramatic defeat against Belgium, where they initially held a 2-0 lead.
In a match that seemed in their favor, Senegal’s hopes were dashed by late goals from Romelu Lukaku and Youri Tielemans. Despite their strong start, Belgium ultimately triumphed in extra time, with Tielemans scoring a crucial penalty to seal the comeback victory.
In response to the loss, Gueye conveyed his feelings through an emotional Instagram message, expressing his intent to step away from national duties while the current coaching staff remains in place.
“I will come back to say a few words regarding the elimination, but I am announcing today that as long as this technical staff remains in place, I will take a break from the national team.”
