Wrexham Triumphs Against Boro, Boosting Parkinson’s Pride

Wrexham Tops Championship Leaders Middlesbrough with Strong Second Half Performance

Wrexham delivered an impressive performance against Championship leaders Middlesbrough, securing a 2-0 victory at the Racecourse Ground. Second half goals from George Thomason and Ollie Rathbone marked a crucial win, bringing an end to Middlesbrough’s 11-game unbeaten run in the league.

This victory served as the perfect response for Wrexham following a disappointing display against Sheffield United just five days prior. Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson emphasized the importance of delivering a performance that resonates with the fans and reflects the spirit of the club. “As I said to you after the game on Friday, all I ever want and all the owners want is the honesty in the performance which our fans can relate to,” Parkinson remarked. “That’s why there’s been a great connection between the supporters and the players, owners, and myself because, in general, they’ve seen honesty and commitment, and that’s what the club’s all about. I’m just really pleased. We’re not getting carried away, but we upset a good team tonight.”

Parkinson continued to highlight the physical nature of the game, stating, “Middlesbrough know they’ve been in a game tonight,” reflecting on the challenge his players presented to the opponents. He also addressed his personal connection to the match, sharing that his father, who has been unwell, would have appreciated the team’s performance while watching from home in Stockton-on-Tees. “I’d just like to make a special mention to my dad, he’s been ill over the last few weeks,” he said. “I know how much that performance will have lifted him tonight, watching back home with a lot of his friends, Middlesbrough fans as well. I just can’t wait to speak to him on the way back.”

Extent of Smith Blow Confirmed

In other news, Wrexham forward Sam Smith was absent from the matchday squad due to a knee injury sustained late in the previous match against Sheffield United. Parkinson confirmed that Smith will undergo surgery next week and will be sidelined for the remainder of the season, having suffered a cruciate injury that is expected to keep him out for nine months. “Unfortunately with Sam, he’s done his cruciate,” he stated.

The manager acknowledged the team has faced multiple injury challenges this season, with other players such as Josh Windass, Nathan Broadhead, Liberato Cacace, and Callum O’Hare also sidelined. However, Parkinson asserted that he would not allow his players to dwell on setbacks. “We’ve had injuries in other years, we’ve had setbacks, we’ve always dug deep,” he commented. “I felt at Sheffield United we looked like a team that had almost taken one blow too many, but I’m not accepting that.”
