Argentine Club Faces Backlash for Celebrating Title Too Soon, Echoing Schalke 2001

Boca Juniors Claims Late Victory, Leaving Rosario Central’s Celebrations in Disarray

In a dramatic turn of events in Argentina’s football league, Boca Juniors seized the championship title on Saturday night, ultimately overshadowing the premature celebrations of their rivals, Rosario Central.

Rosario Central had set the stage for their celebration after defeating Estudiantes de Río Cuarto 2–0 at home. With Boca Juniors held to a goalless draw for most of their match against Defensa y Justicia, Rosario’s players and fans believed they had secured the title. As a result, jubilant fans rushed onto the pitch and the players began their festivities.

However, the excitement was short-lived. Boca’s Enner Valencia scored a decisive goal in the 96th minute, clinching the title for his team with a 1–0 victory. The jubilation in Rosario quickly turned into disappointment as the realization of their early celebration settled in.

This dramatic scene echoed memories of a similar event on May 19, 2001, when FC Schalke 04 appeared to be on course for victory after defeating Unterhaching 5–3. Fans flooded the pitch in pure joy, only for Bayern Munich to score a last-minute goal against Hamburg, snatching the title away from Schalke.

Rosario Central’s players now find themselves sharing a similar fate and the bitter feelings that accompany it.
