In a recent report, Bild (subscription required) claimed that Sunderland have set their sights on Bayer 04 Leverkusen winger Ernest Poku this summer. It has been revealed that the Black Cats would have to compete with Nottingham Forest in the race to sign the Dutch wide player later this year.

Poku’s Impressive Rise In The Bundesliga

Poku enjoyed a good run of form at the German club in the previous campaign when he put in a series of impressive displays for them on the right side of their attack. The Dutch talent featured in 49 matches for his current employers last season, scoring six times and picking up ten assists in the process on all fronts.

The 22-year-old is currently among the most talented wide players in the Bundesliga. Hence, the Black Cats would do well to lure him to the Stadium of Light in this transfer window.

His current contract at the German club will expire in the summer of 2030, which could open the door for Sunderland to sign him on a cut-price deal later this year.

Should Sunderland Boss Regis Le Bris Go For Poku?

Poku is a good dribbler with the ball at his feet and has got the vision to create some inviting chances for his teammates to find the back of the net. He usually generates some power with his shot attempts and can chip in by scoring and creating a lot of important goals for his team from the flanks.

The Dutch sensation is primarily a right-winger but can also operate as a left-sided wide player or as a centre-forward if needed. However, it remains to be seen whether he can maintain his good form in the Premier League if the Black Cats manage to sign him later this year.

We can expect Poku to bring more quality and depth to Sunderland head coach Regis Le Bris’ frontline. He is good enough to challenge for a regular first-team spot at the Stadium of Light in the coming seasons.
