Sunderland Faces Relegation Battle While Preparing for San Siro Trip

Sunderland Faces Relegation Battle Ahead of European Clash with AC Milan

Sunderland eagerly anticipates a match against AC Milan at the San Siro for the Europa League on December 10. However, their focus may need to shift to their crucial Premier League game against Nottingham Forest just three days prior.

Currently, the Black Cats occupy the bottom position in the Premier League after a disappointing 3-1 defeat to Coventry City on Saturday. This loss follows a pattern, as Sunderland, after a surprising promotion last season, now finds itself struggling to avoid relegation.

The team’s upcoming fixtures present a daunting challenge. Before heading to Milan, they will play Chelsea at home, Aston Villa away, Tottenham at home, and Liverpool away, alongside local rivals Newcastle. They also face Croatian side Dinamo Zagreb and Polish club Jagiellonia Bialystok in home European matches. Should Sunderland fail to secure points in the league during this tough run, their chances of turning the season around could diminish significantly by the time they travel to Milan.

The game against Nottingham Forest, which has also had a slow start to the season, becomes increasingly pivotal for Sunderland. Their last win in the Premier League came against Fulham on August 30, shortly after the Europa League draw was announced, and they have not managed a league victory since then. Their recent form includes six defeats and two draws, leading to increased pressure on the team.

Captain Granit Xhaka expressed his disappointment following the defeat to Coventry, highlighting a disconnect between training and performance on the field. He noted the recurring mistakes that undermine their efforts and emphasized the need for improvement.

On the brighter side, Sunderland has fared better in European competitions, currently sitting ninth in their group table with two wins and a draw from three matches. Their success in the Carabao Cup also continues, with a recent 3-2 victory over Brentford setting them up for a quarter-final clash against Crystal Palace.

However, the team’s struggles in the domestic league paint a stark contrast to their European endeavors. They have gathered only one point from three league matches following European fixtures this season. With their defense notably weaker this year—having already conceded 17 goals in nine matches compared to just seven at the same stage last season—Sunderland’s position is precarious.

Head coach Regis le Bris characterized the team’s season thus far as marked by ups and downs, pointing to the numerous unforced errors that have cost them matches. He reiterated that it is not a matter of luck, but rather an issue of execution and attention to detail.

While Sunderland contemplates its defensive frailties, efficiency in front of goal remains a concern as well. They have managed to score only seven goals in nine matches, with only Nottingham Forest scoring fewer. Additionally, they miss defender Dan Ballard, sidelined with a hamstring injury.

Despite the difficulties, Sunderland faced tough opposition in Arsenal, Manchester City, and Brighton earlier in the season. Xhaka remains hopeful of turning things around, stressing the importance of character and determination as they approach critical games ahead.
