Trump Joins World Cup Trophy Presentation Following Spain’s Victory
United States President Donald Trump made a notable appearance during the World Cup trophy presentation, drawing mixed reactions from the audience. After Spain triumphed over Argentina in the final on Sunday, Trump shared the stage with other dignitaries to award medals and trophies to the teams.
Following the conclusion of the match, Trump entered the stadium alongside FIFA President Gianni Infantino. As he walked out of the tunnel towards the temporary stage, he was met with boos from the crowd.
On stage, Trump and Infantino were accompanied by Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, representing the three host nations. While others presented the trophies, Trump had the honor of placing medals around the players’ necks.
Last month, Trump’s participation in the ceremony was confirmed, with Infantino mentioning that the two would be together “enjoying the final and handing the trophy to the winner.”

While Infantino officially handed the trophy to Spanish captain Rodri, Trump stood out as the only one of the three host politicians present during the moment.
Trump held a similar role in the trophy presentation at the Club World Cup last summer, where he was front and center as Chelsea celebrated their victory.
The president’s close relationship with Infantino and perceived influence over the FIFA president has attracted criticism from various quarters, including U.S. Soccer and international reactions. After Trump claimed credit for overturning a suspension on USMNT striker Folarin Balogun, Belgium responded with a cheeky jab at both the U.S. team and the president following their win over the USMNT in the Round of 16.
