Walsall Coach Lee Grant Assesses Squad Strengthening Ahead of New Season

Walsall head coach Lee Grant states he is “not there yet” in terms of strengthening his squad satisfactorily before the new season kicks off.

The Saddlers have signed nine players, with defenders Ryan Leak and Declan Skura being the most recent additions at the Pallet-Track Stadium this week.

Both new signings participated in Tuesday’s friendly loss against Aston Villa, alongside goalkeeper Jed Ward, midfielders Sven Sprangler and Isaac Moore, and striker Andrew Dallas.

Grant is gearing up for his first season in charge after taking over from Mat Sadler in May. He has assured fans that Walsall will implement a strategy focused on League Two with positive, attacking football.

Regarding the squad’s composition, Grant indicated that there is still work to be done.

“For me, we’re still not there and we’re still not close,” he told BBC Radio WM.

“If you just look at the numbers of what’s gone out compared to what’s come in, we’re not there yet.

“The most important thing for us is bringing in players that can impact the group and enhance the quality while having a genuine claim for a starting position.

“We do not want to bring bodies in just for the sake of it. We want to bring in quality players who can help us this year, and that’s what we’re focusing on.”
