    1. FC Köln Signs Australian Midfielder Paul Okon-Engstler from Sydney FC

Bundesliga club 1. FC Köln has announced the signing of Australian international Paul Okon-Engstler from Sydney FC. The 21-year-old defensive midfielder has agreed to a long-term contract at the Geißbockheim, which is set to last until June 2030. Reports indicate the transfer fee is around €1 million.

Okon-Engstler established himself as a key player for Sydney FC during the 2025/26 season, making 27 appearances in the A-League and three more in the Australian cup. His impressive performances secured him a regular spot in the senior Australian national team.

Typically playing as a No. 6, Okon-Engstler can also function in a more advanced central midfield position. His ability to maintain composure under pressure and initiate attacks from deeper areas will offer Köln a different dynamic in midfield.

Paul Okon-Engstler Arrives Following World Cup Participation

The Oostende-born midfielder joins the Bundesliga after a remarkable rise over the last year. Okon-Engstler participated in all four matches for the Socceroos at the recently concluded World Cup, starting in three games.

He has considerable experience in European academy football, having begun his training in Australia before joining Club Brugge at the age of 14, then moving to the youth setup at Benfica.

At Benfica, he represented the club in the UEFA Youth League and later played for the reserve side. He returned to Australia to sign with Sydney FC last summer, quickly making an impact at the senior level before his transfer to Köln.

    Reactions to Okon-Engstler’s Signing

Köln managing director Thomas Kessler highlighted the midfielder’s potential for development and the strong mentality he showcased during his breakthrough season in Australia.

“We’re very pleased that Paul has decided to join 1. FC Köln,” noted sporting director Thomas Kessler in a club statement. “He’s a young player with great potential who has developed positively in recent years.

“His strong performances for Sydney FC earned him a position on the Australian national team, and he demonstrated his capabilities at the World Cup,” Kessler continued. “Paul brings strong footballing skills, high intensity, and a daily commitment to self-improvement. This attitude aligns perfectly with our philosophy.”

“We’re convinced that he will strengthen our central midfield and provide our squad with additional options,” Kessler added. “At the same time, we want to support him thoroughly in his development and progress together.”

“For me, this is precisely the right step in my professional career,” Okon-Engstler said. “FC Köln is a club with a rich history. The stadium and the fans are impressive. I can’t wait to play there and finally take the field with the team.”
