Liverpool Faces Tough Decision on Cody Gakpo Amid Growing Transfer Talk

Liverpool has entered a new chapter with a fresh head coach and a squad needing adjustments. The usual summer speculation about turning a significant sale into multiple arrivals now surrounds Cody Gakpo, especially after Emile Heskey suggested the club should consider selling him if a lucrative offer becomes available.

In a conversation with Metro, Heskey commented: “I would consider selling Cody if a decent offer was on the table. When you’re coming in as a new manager, you have to cold-headedly look at your assets. He is an asset who holds significant market value that you could cash in on to fund your own vision.”

This perspective is straightforward. A new coach evaluates the squad, identifies compatible players, and considers whether one sale could speed up the rebuilding process. Gakpo fits this profile well; at 27 years old, he is experienced, has thrived at a high level, and yet retains a solid resale value. Reports have estimated his market value at around €60m, approximately £51.3m—substantial funds indeed.

    Debate Surrounds Gakpo’s Market Value

However, there is another angle to consider. Liverpool’s lineup lacks depth in specialized wide forwards, and Iraola has indicated a need for an additional winger. Selling a player who logged 3,596 minutes last season becomes counterproductive. Gakpo appeared in 41 matches during 2025/26, a clear indication of his value to the team.

While some may point to his lackluster goal tally of nine as a reason for concern, it is essential to differentiate between poor form and diminished value. Clubs often stumble when they mistake a temporary decline for an irreversible dead end.

Iraola Should First Assess Gakpo Thoroughly

Iraola has only just begun to establish his approach with the team. Selling Gakpo before conducting an in-depth assessment during training would be hasty. A fresh tactical framework could reveal a different player. If the previous strategies felt stale, a new direction could quickly change perceptions.

Timing also plays a crucial role. Gakpo recently returned from an international stint with the Netherlands, where he scored three goals during the World Cup. He remains a prominent player, known for his physicality and versatility across the front line.

    Rebuilding Liverpool’s Squad Requires Caution

If an extraordinary offer comes in, most clubs will listen. That’s just part of football. However, actively pushing Gakpo toward the exit could complicate matters for Liverpool. If they are already in need of an additional winger, selling a regular starter in that role seems counterintuitive.

The bottom line is that while Heskey’s principle holds some weight in recruitment strategy, the rationale in this specific instance appears weak. Liverpool needs clarity, depth, and effective attackers. Letting go of Cody Gakpo this summer might offer financial gain but could lead to greater issues down the line.
