Headline: Liverpool’s Potential Loss of Jarell Quansah Highlights Troubling Transfer Decisions

Liverpool is on the brink of marking its worst period of transfer activity with a potential deal exceeding £52 million for defender Jarell Quansah. As the transfer window approaches its close, Arsenal is reportedly preparing a move for the young talent, as stated by Sky Sports.

Following their Premier League victory in 2025, Liverpool undertook a costly overhaul of their squad, investing over £400 million in new players while earning around £200 million from player sales. However, many of these departures have since been deemed poor decisions.

The specifics regarding the potential valuation of Quansah’s transfer remain unverified, primarily due to Bayer Leverkusen’s reluctance to part with the player. Nevertheless, Arsenal is eager to sway Leverkusen and intends to offer a substantial amount.

According to The BBC, Liverpool retains the option to exercise first refusal should Leverkusen entertain any bid. Reports indicate that Arsenal’s proposal could surpass £52 million, possibly reaching over £60 million, as Liverpool has the opportunity to re-sign Quansah for that amount next summer.

If Arsenal advances beyond that offer, Leverkusen may find it difficult to resist. Should Quansah continue to develop, Liverpool could be put in a position to re-acquire him next year for a higher price, making an immediate sale appealing for Leverkusen.

This situation underscores a troubling trend in Liverpool’s recent sales. Allowing a homegrown England international to potentially join Arsenal—a significant competitor—for approximately £35 million would reflect poorly on the club’s transfer strategy. Other concerning sales include Caoimhin Kelleher, who moved to Brentford for an initial fee of £12.5 million with potential add-ons, and Tyler Morton, who transferred to Lyon at a modest price, quickly becoming one of Ligue 1’s standout midfielders.

Further complicating matters, Harvey Elliott’s loan deal has negatively impacted his career trajectory and market value, while Luis Diaz’s departure is increasingly viewed as a poor decision, as Liverpool is likely to spend double the original fee to replace him.

In summary, Liverpool finds itself in a precarious position, having lost significant homegrown talent without adequate returns, while their squad has suffered as a result of these questionable sales decisions.

Liverpool‘s worst period of transfer business will be sealed should a £52m+ deal go through. Now we just wait.

Liverpool did something crazy after winning the Premier League in 2025. They decided to overhaul the squad at great expense, moving players on and bringing several in.

The incomings would cost over £400m all-in, offset by around £200m in outgoings. And there were many, many outgoings.

In hindsight, though, those outgoings were terrible. Or at least, most of them were. It’s something now underlined by a potential £52m+ deal for Jarell Quansah, with Arsenal lining up a move before the end of the window (Sky Sports).

Now, the actual value of that potential deal hasn’t been confirmed, primarily because Bayer Leverkusen don’t wish to sell. Arsenal want to convince them otherwise, though, and plan to offer a large amount.

The BBC do claim that Liverpool still have a first refusal should any bid be accepted. We also know that the bid would climb over £52m and probably push over £60m as the Reds boast an option to sign him for that amount next summer.

But should Arsenal offer over that amount, Leverkusen will be tempted. Very tempted. They will almost certainly lose him back to Liverpool for £60m if he continues his development next summer and cashing in for more now may suit them.

It’s something that would underpin a disastrous summer of sales. This scenario, should it play out, would mean letting a homegrown England international end up at Arsenal, a fierce rival, for £35m.

That’s a disaster no matter how you look at it. And it joins other terrible sales like Caoimhin Kelleher, a young Premier League-ready goalkeeper, sign for Brentford for an initial £12.5m that could rise to a mere £18m in add-ons.

Or Tyler Morton signing for Lyon for peanuts and quickly establishing himself as one of the better midfielders in Ligue 1. Or maybe Harvey Elliott losing a year of his career in a disastrous loan deal that has absolutely tanked his value.

Even the Luis Diaz sale has looked poor. He’s one of the world’s best wingers and Liverpool will likely pay double what they sold him for just to find someone of similar quality.

There has never been such a poor series of sales from the Reds. They’ve lost out on brilliant homegrown talent with little to show for it, while the actual squad moved dramatically backwards over the subsequent season.
