Headline: Newcastle and Liverpool Honor Kevin Keegan Before Premier League Match

Supporters of Newcastle United and Liverpool united in a heartfelt tribute to the late Kevin Keegan as they met on the opening weekend of the Premier League season.

Keegan, who died in July at the age of 75 after a battle with stage four cancer, was a revered presence at both clubs. In one of his last public remarks, he expressed a desire to attend a match at Newcastle’s St James’ Park to say “goodbye.”

Before kickoff, all four sides of St James’ Park showcased a large mosaic honoring the two-time Ballon d’Or recipient. Newcastle fans displayed Keegan’s shirt number in black and white, while the Liverpool section presented ‘Keegan’ in red and white.

Newcastle supporters also unfurled a banner featuring one of Keegan’s memorable quotes: “I want people to dream about their football club. They should. We should all be dreamers at heart. Some people are the opposite and say ‘we can’t do that’, but when you ask them why, they can’t give a reason. Well, I say, ‘Why not?'”

During their warm-up, players from both teams wore special shirts emblazoned with ‘Keegan 7’. A collection of tributes from fans was also assembled in the center circle prior to the match.

A moment of applause followed a video tribute, with several of Keegan’s former players, including Alan Shearer, Les Ferdinand, and David Ginola, in attendance alongside members of Keegan’s family.

As a prelude to the match, tears were shed by fans as they chanted, “There’s only one Kevin Keegan.” Sir Kenny Dalglish and Ian Rush led tributes from Liverpool, and they laid a wreath of red flowers outside the stadium. Similar tributes emerged at Manchester City, another of Keegan’s former teams, before their Sunday match against Bournemouth.

Keegan is celebrated in English football as one of the sport’s first true superstars. He made significant contributions as both a player at Liverpool, where he won multiple titles, and later as a charismatic manager for Newcastle, igniting a revival that transformed the club and renewed hopes among supporters.

In their statement following Keegan’s death, Newcastle remarked, “We are devastated to learn of the passing of Kevin Keegan, one of the most iconic, influential and deeply loved figures in our club’s history.” Liverpool also conveyed their deep sorrow, acknowledging his remarkable legacy and lasting impact on the club.

With Liverpool, Keegan formed a key part of Bill Shankly’s first great side, winning three First Division titles, the FA Cup, the European Cup and two Uefa Cups. He left Liverpool in 1977 and joined Hamburg, where he won back-to-back Ballon d’Ors.

As a manager, Keegan’s greatest achievement came at Newcastle as he infused the club and city with a sense of belief after taking over a team that were battling relegation from the second tier of English football.

Liverpool added: “We are deeply saddened by the passing of the legendary Kevin Keegan and mourn his loss. His indomitable spirit and remarkable contribution will be forever etched in our history and his legacy will live on.”
