With Liverpool, Keegan formed a key part of Bill Shankly’s first great side, winning three First Division titles, the FA Cup, the European Cup and two Uefa Cups. He left Liverpool in 1977 and joined Hamburg, where he won back-to-back Ballon d’Ors.
As a manager, Keegan’s greatest achievement came at Newcastle as he infused the club and city with a sense of belief after taking over a team that were battling relegation from the second tier of English football.
