Headline: Gabriel Bannigan Resigns as Monaghan Manager After Two-Year Tenure

Gabriel Bannigan has announced his resignation from his position as the manager of the Monaghan senior football team after two years at the forefront.

Bannigan first joined the Monaghan management team in 2022, working alongside Vinny Corey, before taking over the role of head coach in 2024.

During Bannigan’s time as manager, Monaghan achieved notable successes, including winning the Division Two title in 2025. They also reached the All-Ireland quarter-finals on two occasions, facing defeat against Donegal and Louth.

However, the team encountered significant challenges this year, experiencing relegation from Division One after a difficult league campaign in which they did not secure any points. Despite this setback, Monaghan rebounded in the Ulster Senior Football Championship, earning victories against Cavan and Derry, only to fall to Armagh in the final after extra time.

“I am very disappointed to announce that I am stepping down as manager of the Monaghan senior football team,” Bannigan expressed in a statement. “When I was appointed two years ago, I accepted the challenge of leading the Monaghan team through an inevitable period of transition and it has been an absolute privilege to do so.”

He further reflected on his commitment to building a team aligned with the core values of Monaghan GAA—honesty, humility, hard work, and a never-give-up spirit. “I think it is fair to say this Monaghan team has delivered on that promise and the culture created provides a very strong platform to build on in the months and years ahead,” he concluded.

Gabriel Bannigan has stepped down from his role as Monaghan manager after two years at the helm.

Bannigan initially joined Monaghan as part of Vinny Corey’s management team in 2022 before succeeding Corey as boss in 2024.

Under Bannigan, Monaghan won the Division Two title in 2025 and reached successive All-Ireland quarter-finals where they were knocked out by Donegal and then Louth.

The Farney men were relegated from Division One this year after a tough league campaign in which they failed to pick up a point.

They bounced back well in the Ulster SFC with wins over Cavan and Derry but suffered an extra-time defeat against Armagh in the decider.

“I ma very disappointed to announce that I am stepping down as manager of the Monaghan senior football team,” Bannigan said in a statement.

“When I was appointed two years ago, I accepted the challenge of leading the Monaghan team through an inevitable period of transition and it has been an absolute privilege to do so.

“On taking the role I promised to mould a Monaghan team that would reflect the values I grew up with in Monaghan GAA, honest, humility, hard work and never say die spirit, I think it is fair to say this Monaghan team has delivered on that promise and the culture created provides a very strong platform to build on in the months and years ahead.”
